MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota State Maverick women's hockey team was swept by #5/6-rated Minnesota 6-2 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series finale played at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center, Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks now stand 5-3 overall, including a 1-3 mark in WCHA action, while the Golden Gophers now own a 3-3 record overall and in WCHA contests this season.
The Gophers carried a 3-0 lead into the first intermission after getting a power-play goal from Gracie Ostertag at the 2:32 mark and two other goals from Savannah Norcross (6:24) and Peyton Hemp (17:18) in the first period.
In the second period, Amy Potomak scored the Gophers' fourth-consecutive goal at 4:53 before Maverick sophomore forward Sydney Langseth scored on the power play for her fourth goal of the season to halt Minnesota's scoring streak. The Mavericks continued to mount a comeback in the middle period when junior forward Kennedy Bobyck scored her third goal of year off a back-door feed on a rush from her linemate Kelsey King. Just as MSU was beginning to push its way back, Potomak spoiled the momentum with her second goal of the game following a takeaway on an MSU breakout before simultaneously firing it past MSU netminder Calla Frank in the slot at the 18:42 mark to make it a 5-2 game.
The Gophers held on to win in the final period while scoring one more goal off the stick of Emily Olsen at 11:24 of the third period. Minnesota came out on top by a final score of 6-2.
In net for the Mavericks, Frank, now 4-3 this season, stopped 40 of the 46 shots she faced.
The Gophers outshot the Mavericks 46-11. Both sides had one power-play goal. Minnesota State had three chances while Minnesota ended up with four opportunities.
With no slate of games lined up for next weekend, the Mavericks will rest up in preparation to host the nation's top team, #1-rated Wisconsin, Oct. 29-30 at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
