Marquette, Mich. --- Fifth-rated Minnesota State got goals from four different players and junior netminder
Dryden McKay continued his stingy ways as the Mavericks rolled to a 4-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association road win at Northern Michigan Sunday.
The win, which gives Minnesota State a 5-1-1 overall record for the season and a 2-0-0 mark in league play, comes following Saturday's 5-0 victory over the Wildcats to complete the two-game sweep.
The Mavericks spread out their scoring in the contest, tallying once in the first and once in the second before closing out the game with a pair of third-period markers. Sophomore forward
Cade Borchardt connected for his fifth goal of the season at 6:47 of the opening period with the Mavericks on the power play to make it a 1-0 lead. Senior forward
Todd Burgess also scored with Minnesota State on the man advantage, with his second goal of the season coming at the 10:20 mark of the second period. Freshman defenseman
Akito Hirose, who had drawn an assist on the goal by Burgess, stepped up from the blue line and wired a shot that found the back of the net at 15:34 of the third period, making it 3-0. The goal is the first of Hirose's career. Sophomore forward
Ryan Sandelin's empty-netter at 18:50 closed out the scoring in the game.
Dryden McKay, who's now 5-1-0 for the season with this afternoon's win, turned aside all 21 shots he faced in claiming his fourth shutout of the season. It's also the 18th shutout of his career and moves him into a tie for seventh on the NCAA Division I men's hockey all-time list.
Borchardt ups his team-leading season totals to five goals and four assists for nine points. Hirose's goal and assist in today's win gives the rookie blueliner seven points on the season on a goal and six assists. Junior forward
Julian Napravnik chipped in with a pair of assists.
Next action for Minnesota State is next Friday and Saturday with Michigan Tech visiting for a pair of WCHA contests.
