2019-20 All-WCHA Teams

WIlgren, King and Frank Collect All-WCHA Honors; 14 Mavericks Named to the WCHA All-Academic Team

Bloomington, Minn. --- Sophomore defenseman Anna Wilgren was selected to the 2019-20 All-Western Collegiate Hockey Association Third Team, while freshman forward Kelsey King and freshman goaltender Calla Frank were named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team, presented by Sterling Trophy.

Hailing from Hudson, Wis., Wilgren appeared in all 35 games this season, leading the team with 18 assists and 23 points, while also scoring five goals. She also leads the WCHA with 90 blocked shots on the season, which is also fourth most in the country. Wilgren posted a career-high four points against Merrimack on Nov. by scoring two goals and collecting two assists, tied for the second most in a game at MSU. She also recorded a career-high three assists against Lindenwood on Jan. 31, which is tied for the sixth most in a game at MSU. Wilgren has been named a WCHA Defenseman of the Week twice for the weekends of Oct. 25-26 and Nov. 1-2, while also being selected to the Windjammer Classic All-Tournament Team on Nov. 29-30. Her three game-winning goals scored are the most on the team and tied for the third most in a single season and her 18 assists are tied for fourth most in a single season at MSU. The current 23 points are a new single season record for points by a defenseman, surpassing the original mark of 20 by Emilia Andersson (2012-13). Wilgren currently has the fourth most points all-time by a defenseman with a stat line of 9-24--33.

A native of Elk River, Minn., King has appeared in all 35 games this season, scoring six goals and collecting 16 assists for 22 points. She recorded four assists in her first two collegiate games against Rensselaer on Sept. 27-28. King scored the first ever three-on-three goal for MSU on Oct. 18 against Ohio State, helped the Mavericks win a shootout over Ohio State on Oct. 19 and also scored again in the three-on-three overtime period against Bemidji State on Jan. 25. She has been selected the WCHA Rookie of the Week three times on Sept. 27-28, Nov. 22-23 and Jan. 31-Feb. 1, while also being selected the WCHA Rookie of the Month for Sept./Oct. King currently sits tied for first in assists and second in points among WCHA rookies. She also currently sits tied for sixth in points by a freshman in a season with 22 at MSU.

A Hugo, Minn., native, Frank has appeared in 17 games (6-6-3) with 15 starts this season and boasts a 2.76 goals-against average, .909 save percentage, 427 saves and two shutouts. She recorded a shutout win in her first career collegiate start against Rensselaer on Sept. 28. Frank recorded a career-high 39 saves on 42 shots seen against Ohio State on Oct. 19, including 21 saves in the third period. She has helped the Mavericks to third place finishes in the Windjammer Classic and the Minnesota Cup, including a shutout over Vermont in the Windjammer Classic on Nov. 30. Frank has been honored with WCHA Rookie of the Week three times for the weekends of Oct. 18-19, Nov. 29-30 and Feb. 7-8. She backstopped the Mavericks in the 3-1 upset win over then-#1 Wisconsin, making 35-of-36 saves on Feb. 8. 

King and Frank join Wilgren and sophomore goaltender Abigail Levy as members of the WCHA All-Rookie team as Wilgren and Levy made the team last season.

Fourteen Minnesota State women's hockey student-athletes have been selected to the 2018-19 Western Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic Team, as announced by conference officials on Thursday.

The Mavericks named to the WCHA All-Academic Team are: Emily Antony (Sr., F, Rogers, Minn.); Brooke Bryant (So., F, Linden, Calif.); Claire Butorac (So., F, Andover, Minn.); Chloe Crosby (Sr., G, Lakeville, Minn.); Brittyn Fleming (Jr., F, Oregon, Wis.); Mariah Gardner (Jr., F, Eagle Lake, Ont.); Taylor Gulenchyn (Sr., F, Stillwater, Minn.); Jordan Jackson (Sr., D, Maplewood, Minn.); Jessica Kondas (Jr., D, Calgary, Alta.); Abigail Levy (So., G, Congers, N.Y.); Madison Oelkers (So., F, Warroad, Minn.); Sofia Poinar (Sr., F, Chanhassen, Minn.); McKenzie Sederberg (Sr., D, Andover, Minn.); Anna Wilgren (So., D, Hudson, Wis.).

To qualify for the WCHA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed one year of eligibility at present institution, prior to the current academic year and have a GPA of at least 3.0 for the previous two semesters or three quarters.

Sixth-seeded Minnesota State will take on third-seeded Ohio State in the WCHA Quarterfinals in a best-of-three series, Feb. 28-March 1. The puck will drop Friday at 6:07 p.m. EST, Saturday at 3:07 p.m. EST and Sunday at 3:07 p.m. EST (if necessary).
