Mavericks Sweep Lindenwood in 4-2 Win on Saturday

Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team completed the series sweep over the Lindenwood Lions in a 4-2 nonconference win Saturday at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

This was the Mavericks tenth win this season, marking the first time since the 2013-14 season where the team reached double digit wins.

After the first period went scoreless for the second straight day, a total of four goals were scored in the second period that ended with the Mavericks owning a 3-1 lead at the second intermission. Minnesota State had a 5-on-3 advantage early in the period and as the first Lions' first skater returned to the ice, junior center Brittyn Fleming scored the power play goal from just inside the right face-off circle for her fifth goal this season at the 6:06 mark. Thirty seconds later, Lindenwood evened the score up as junior winger Sierra Burt put away a rebound past freshman netminder Calla Frank. The Mavericks regained the lead at the 17:44 mark when sophomore blueliner Anna Wilgren went top shelf on the Lions' freshman netminder Julia Maguire, skimming the bottom of the pipe from the middle of the ice for her fifth goal of the season. Minnesota State's lead grew to two a minute later as senior captain McKenzie Sederberg took a shot from the point that went over the right pad of Maguire for her third goal of the season.

Senior winger Emily Antony scored for the second straight game as freshman winger Kelsey King fed her from below the red line to the middle of the ice. Antony's fourth goal of the season came at the 16:40 mark in the third period to make the score 4-1. Lindenwood scored the last goal of the game on the power play at the 18:59 mark with senior forward Cierra Paisley scoring the goal.

Freshman Calla Frank (5-5-2) made 30 saves in the win, making 12 saves in each of the last two periods.

The Mavericks outshot the Lions by a 43-32 margin. Minnesota State and Lindenwood both went went one-for-four on the power play.

Antony (goal and assist), Wilgren (goal and assist) and King (two assists) all tallied a multi-point game to lead the Mavericks to the win.

Now standing with a 10-14-5 (3-12-3-3 WCHA) record, the Mavericks will return to Western Collegiate Hockey Association action as #1 Wisconsin comes to the Key City on Feb. 7-8 at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
