Mavericks Earn Third Place at the Minnesota Cup

Duluth, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team earned a tie for the second straight game with the final score being 2-2 against St. Cloud State. The Mavericks earned third place at the Minnesota Cup after scoring in the second overtime period on Sunday in AMSOIL Arena.

The Huskies struck first at the 11:27 mark in the first period as freshman forward Olivia Cvar took a Maverick turnover deep in the defensive zone and went top shelf on freshman netminder Calla Frank for the goal. Sophomore winger Claire Butorac answered for the Mavericks as she blocked a shot on the defensive end and converted on the partial breakaway. Butorac went five-hole against junior goaltender Emma Polusny at the 17:23 mark for her sixth goal of the season. MSU out shot SCSU by a 15-6 margin in the first period.

SCSU took a 2-1 advantage, scoring the only goal of the second period at the 13:19 mark. Senior winger Dana Rasmussen scored in the top right corner from the right dot as Frank was being screened on the play.

Minnesota State came from behind to force overtime for the second straight game by scoring a goal in the third period. Junior blueliner Jessica Kondas scored for the second consecutive game for her second goal of the season at the 11:13 mark. Kondas hit a slap shot near the blue line by the right boards that made it through traffic to the low left corner of the net.

The game ended in a tie after the first overtime period went scoreless and the Mavericks played in a three-on-three second overtime period for the fourth time this season. Junior defenseman Tristen Truax scored in the second overtime period to clinch third place in the Minnesota Cup for MSU. Truax went top shelf over Polusny after shaking her defender near the right face-off circle.

Freshman Calla Frank (4-3-2) made 21 through regulation and the first overtime, while also turning away another couple shots in the second overtime.

The Mavericks doubled up the Huskies in shots on net by a 46-23 margin. Minnesota State went zero-for-two on the power play and St. Cloud State was zero-for-one with the man advantage.
