Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Minnesota State Overwhelmed by #5 Ohio State 6-0

Columbus, Ohio --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team fell to #5 Ohio State 6-0 in the first WCHA game of 2020 Friday in the OSU Ice Arena.
 
The Buckeyes came out firing in the first period as sophomore netminder Abigail Levy made nine saves within the first four minutes of play. However, Ohio State was able to put one past Levy at the 3:56 mark as junior defenseman Lisa Bruno netted the first goal. About halfway through the opening stanza, OSU grew its lead to two as junior winger Tatum Skaggs claimed the goal for the Buckeyes. Minnesota State found itself trailing 2-0 after one period of play as Ohio State also held a 17-5 shot advantage.    
 
OSU grew its advantage by three in the second period to hold a 5-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. Shortly after the Mavericks killed off a penalty, the Buckeyes scored their third goal against Levy as junior forward Liz Schepers scored the goal. Following the goal, freshman Calla Frank replaced Levy in net for MSU. Just over a minute later, Ohio State grew its lead to 4-0 with senior forward Rebecca Freiburger beating Frank. The third goal came at the 10:00 mark as sophomore winger Gabby Rosenthal became the fifth different Buckeye to score.

Ohio State scored the final goal of the game on a power play at the 19:20 mark in the third period. Junior forward Emma Maltais garnered the goal of the Buckeyes to make the final score 6-0.
 
Sophomore Abigail Levy (3-8-2) made 19 saves in the first 27 minutes of the game. Freshman Calla Frank came in for the final 32 minutes and stopped 23 shots. For the Buckeyes, sophomore Andrea Braendli (9-4-4) collected the shutout by making 13 saves.

The Mavericks were outshot by the Buckeyes by a 46-13 margin. Minnesota State went zero-for-one on the power play and Ohio State was one-for-two with the man advantage.
 
Now standing with a 7-11-4 (2-9-2-2 WCHA) record, Minnesota State and Ohio State will close out the series tomorrow at 3:07 p.m. ET.
