Michaelis, McKay Appear on Hobey Baker Ballot

Mankato, Minn. --- A pair of players from the third-rated Minnesota State Mavericks have been nominated for this year's Hobey Baker Award.

Marc Michaelis, a senior center, a Dryden McKay, a sophomore goaltender, both have their names appear on the first phase of this year's balloting for the Hobey Baker Award.

The Hobey Baker Award, which has been presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I men's hockey, was first awarded in 1981. Michaelis and McKay are two of 75 college hockey players representing 45 NCAA Division I schools to appear on this year's ballot.

Fan voting (phase one) runs now until Sunday, March 8 at midnight. College hockey fans can cast their vote by going to the voting website http://www.hobeybaker.com.

Phase two of fan balloting will come from the list of Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists beginning March 19 and closing March 29. The fans' vote accounts for a full one percent of the total ballot in each phase in selecting this year's award recipient. The Hobey Hat Trick of three finalists is announced April 2 and the winner is unveiled April 10.

Michaelis leads Minnesota State in scoring with 15 goals and 15 assists for 30 points in 24 games on the year. Michaelis, who stands tied for third in the nation in scoring, is a three-time First Team All-WCHA selection and the 2019-20 WCHA Preseason Player of the Year. Michaelis is the NCAA's active career scoring leader with 148 points (66 Gs, 82 As) in 141 career games played. His 148 points ranks third on Minnesota State's career scoring list for the DI-era.

McKay, a five-time Western Collegiate Hockey Association Goaltender of the Week honoree this year, stands 19-2-1 with a .950 save percentage and 1.14 goals against average on the season. The Downers Grove, Ill., native leads the country in wins, goals against average, save percentage and shutouts (he has seven). McKay stands along atop the school single-season record for shutout with seven and his 11 career shutouts are tied for first all-time at Minnesota State (Cole Huggins (MSU 2013-17) also had 11).

Minnesota State heads into a WCHA road series at Bowling Green this weekend riding a five-game winning streak and owning an 20-3-1 overall record. The Mavericks have won 15 of their last 17 games and are rated third is this week's USCHO poll.
