Mavericks Head North to Take on Bulldogs and Huskies

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team will wrap up its four-game road trip this weekend as it takes on Minnesota Duluth this Friday, before squaring off with St. Cloud State on Saturday. Game times are set for 7:30 p.m., and 5:30 p.m., respectively.

Minnesota State History: The 2019-20 season marks the 98th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,362-909 (.599) in 2,271 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 175-73 (.705) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

The Mavericks made their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. MSU owns an 18-15 record (.545) in NCAA Tournament play, including a 91-62 loss to Northwest Missouri State in 2019.

Against the Bulldogs: Friday's game between Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth marks their 76th all-time meeting with MSU leading the series 43-32. Last season, the Bulldogs defeated the Mavericks 80-77 in Taylor Center.

Senior Kevin Krieger tallied 16 points and five rebounds, while senior Cameron Kirksey added eight points and our rebounds.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 20-6 record against Minnesota Duluth, including a 6-4 record on the road.

Against the Huskies: Saturday's meeting between Minnesota State and St. Cloud State will be their 181st meeting, with the Huskies leading the all-time series 92-88. MSU bested SCSU 73-61 in Taylor Center earlier this season.

Freshman Ryland Holt netted a game-high 23 points against the Huskies this season, while sophomore Kelby Kramer notched a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the weekend the owner of an 8-8 record, including a 6-4 NSIC record. Minnesota State fell to Sioux Falls 71-64, before topping Southwest Minnesota State 53-46.

As a team, MSU has averaged 76.8 points and 39.1 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 45.5% from the field. The Mavericks have passed out 214 assists and have recorded 92 blocks.

Three Mavericks are averaging more than 10 points a game this season, including senior Cameron Kirksey who is averaging 19.2 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. Freshman Ryland Holt is averaging 14.3 points and 5.4 rebounds also, while senior Kevin Krieger has tallied 11.6 points a game. Freshman Corvon Seales has posted 9.1 points and 3.0 assists a game as well.

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 19th season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 401-173 (.698).
    
Concerning the Bulldogs: Minnesota Duluth enters the weekend the owner of a 13-3 overall record, including an 8-2 NSIC record. UMD has won its last four games, including a 78-54 win over the University of Mary and a 93-69 win over Minot State last weekend.

As a team, UMD is averaging 84.9 points and 37.1 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 48.5% from the field and 40.1% from three point range. The Bulldogs have tallied 103 steals this season and have connected on 166 three pointers.

Brandon Myer leads the Bulldog offense with 21.6 points and 9.7 rebounds per game this season. Drew Blair has averaged 14.8 points per game this season and has connected on 32 three pointers. Logan Rohrscheib has tallied 10.9 points a game this season and has connected on 35 shots from downtown also.

Minnesota Duluth is coached by Justin Wieck who is in his second season with the Bulldogs.  He owns a 30-13 record.

Concerning the Huskies: St. Cloud State enters the weekend the owner of a 9-7 record, including a 6-4 NSIC record. Last weekend, the Huskies defeated Minot State 82-65, before falling to the University of Mary 85-80.

As a team, SMSU has averaged 77.7 points and 33.7 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 48.9% from the field and 34.5% from three point range. The Huskies have record 202 assists and 121 steals this season.

Trevon Marshall leads the SCSU offense with 20.8 points and 4.6 assists per game this season. Anthony Roberts has averaged 11.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game also, while Ilya Tyrtyshnik has tallied 10.8 points and a team-leading 33 three pointers made.

St. Cloud State is coached by Matt Reimer who is in his sixth season with the Huskies. He owns a 105-67 record.
