Bismarck, N.D.. — Minnesota State takes the first two games of the three game set against U-Mary. The Mavericks won both games by a score of 6-0 and 11-2.
Minnesota State (22-8, 13-5 NSIC) completes the three game sweep over U-Mary with an eight run second inning being the difference in favor of the Mavericks.
The Marauders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a solo shot to right field by senior second baseman
Darius Barlas.
The Mavericks answered with an eight run top of the second inning to take an 8-1 lead. Junior second baseman
Teddy Petersen started the inning by getting hit with a pitch with one out. Junior left fielder
Ty Denzer singled and both runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Sophomore designated hitter
Cam Kline brought both runs home on a double to right center field. Sophomore third baseman
Mitch Frederick reached on an error in the next at bat that allowed Kline to cross the plate. Senior center fielder
Tyler Berg was then hit by a pitch and senior catcher
Tom Imholte singled to load the bases. Freshman shortstop
Nick Altermatt walked to bring home one run before junior first baseman
Ty Buck sent his sixth home run of the season over the fence for a grand slam with two outs.
Minnesota State added one run in the top of the third and fourth innings to extend to lead to 10-1. In the third, Kline singled to open the inning and Imholte was hit by a pitch with two outs. Altermatt reached on another Marauders error that brought in Kline. In the fourth, Petersen led off the inning with a triple down the right field line and Denzer lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Petersen.
U-Mary brought in a run in the bottom of the fourth frame off another solo home run by senior designated hitter
Jesus Payan to left field.
The Marauders further cut into the deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning with two more runs. Payan singled to begin the inning and senior first baseman
Daulton Sauce followed with a two-run home run to left field.
The Mavericks answered with two runs of their own in the top of the eighth inning for the final two runs of the game. Buck walked and Petersen was again hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Sophomore
Hunter Frericks, who pinch hit for Denzer in the sixth inning, reached on a fielder's choice with Petersen being out at second. Kline followed with an RBI single to right field and then sophomore
Carter Elliott grounded out to bring in Frericks for the final run of the game.
Kline lead the way by going three-for-five with three RBI and two runs scored. Imholte and Petersen also had multi-hit games, while Buck drove in four runs on his grand slam.
Freshman right-hander
Collin Denk started for the Mavericks and went four innings, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out six. Freshman right-hander
Kyle Nordby (3-0) earned the win after coming in during the fifth inning and worked a scoreless inning by striking out two batters. Junior right-hander
Jack Rasmussen pitched the sixth inning and gave up two runs on two hits, while striking out one. Freshman right-hander
Zach Gustafson worked the next two innings and gave up one hit. Senior right-hander
Bobby Gauvreau pitched the final inning and also only gave up a hit and struck out one batter.

Zac Martin (1-3) lasted an inning and a third, allowing seven runs (three earned runs) on four hits and a walk. Senior right-hander
Ian Fisher recorded one out and gave up one on a hit. Freshman right-hander
Brandon Gill pitched an inning, allowing one unearned run on a hit and a walk. Senior left-hander
Colin Gudereit threw three innings in relief and gave up one run on two hits. Senior right-hander
Charles Bielejeski pitched two innings and allowed two runs (one earned run) on two hits and a walk. Senior right-hander
Chris Scott pitched the final inning and only allowed a hit, while the pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts
Minnesota State will face Northern State in a mid-week series on Wednesday in Aberdeen, S.D. The doubleheader will begin at 1:30 p.m., with the second game following at 3:30 p.m.
