Mankato, Minn. — Minnesota State took both games in a doubleheader Tuesday against Northern State by scores of 7-1 and 14-1 at Bowyer Field.
Minnesota State (24-8, 16-5 NSIC) collected its fifth and sixth wins in a row, winning both games in the doubleheader against the Northern State Wolves (13-16, 8-11 NSIC) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
GAME 1 – Minnesota State 7, Northern State 1
Sophomore right-hander
Jimmy Larson tossed a complete game as the Mavericks upend the Wolves 7-1 in first game of the doubleheader.
Minnesota State got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior right fielder
Jordan Hart launched a home run to left field for his 11th of the season.
It wasn't until the top of the fourth inning that the Mavericks would add on to their lead. Junior first baseman
Ty Buck and junior second baseman
Teddy Petersen notched one-out hits to put runners on first and third. Sophomore designated hitter
Cam Kline stepped up to the plate with two on and blasted a three-run home run to left center field. The lead stood 4-0 in favor of the Mavericks to close out the fourth inning.
Minnesota State added a run in each of the next three innings, beginning in the top of the fifth inning as Buck drove in freshman shortstop
Nick Altermatt on a single up the middle with two outs. In the top of the sixth inning, senior catcher
Tom Imholte grounded out with runners on second and third to bring junior left fielder
Ty Denzer home. To extend the lead to 7-0 in the top of the seventh inning, Petersen drew a two out walk and then Kline doubled to deep center field to bring around Petersen to score.
Northern State put one run up in the final inning as junior left fielder
Chad Hinkle lifted a sacrifice fly and brought home junior first baseman
Hayden Houts to make the final score 7-1.
Kline led the Maverick offensive charge by going two-for-four with a double, a home run, four runs batted in and one run scored. Buck and Petersen also had multi-hit games, recording two hits each.
Larson (4-3) recorded his third complete game of the season, giving up four hits and one run with nine strikeouts and one walk in the dominant pitching performance.
Junior right-hander
Zach Hrvol (0-4) lasted four innings in his start and allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out two. Senior right-hander
Mike Wiesmann pitched three innings in relief and gave up three runs (two earned runs) on three hits and two walks, while garnering three strikeouts.
GAME 2 – Minnesota State 14, Northern State 1
The Mavericks' sixth straight win proved to be an offensive explosion, highlighted by an eight run eighth inning with six pinch hitters coming to the plate.
For the second straight game, Minnesota State got out to a quick lead, with two runs crossing the plate in the top of the first inning. Altermatt hit and infield single and Hart quickly followed with a a two-run drive to right field for his 12th homerun of the season.
After two walks and a hit by pitch in the top of the second inning, Altermatt doubled down the left field line to log an RBI and increase the Maverick lead to 3-0. After Hart wore a pitch to load the bases, Buck was also hit by a pitch to record his 30th RBI of the season, giving the Mavericks a 4-0 lead over the Wolves.
The Wolves made their way on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning off a double by Houts that knocked in senior center fielder
Justin Barrenche. With guys on base and no outs, freshman right-handed starter
Jack Zigan forced a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning with the Mavericks still ahead 4-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, Minnesota State logged two more runs starting with Hart knocking in Altermatt with a triple to right field. Later in the inning, Petersen flew out to center field to bring in Hart from third in sacrifice fashion. The Mavericks were holding onto a 6-1 lead to close out the inning.
The Mavericks then had eight runs cross the plate in the top of the eighth inning that ultimately ended the game due to the 10-run mercy rule. MSU also sent six pinch hitters to the plate in the inning. Buck and Petersen were both hit by a pitch and then Kline walked to load the bases. Junior
Jack Mattson hit a sacrifice fly in foul territory to bring home Buck. Freshman
Mitch Frederick singled and sophomore
Jack Waletich was hit by another pitch to load the bases up once again. Junior
Ty Denzer singled through the right side to bring home Kline and Frederick. Freshman
Rob Meidl walked to load the bases before Hart lifted his third home run of the day and 13th on the season over the left field fence for a grand slam.
Hart led the Maverick at the plate in game two by going three-for-five with two home runs, two runs scored and three RBI. Altermatt also went three-for-four in the game, while Kline added another two hits.
Zigan (3-1) looked sharp going six innings in a bounce back start and allowed one run on four hits, while striking out nine batters. Freshman right-hander
Kyle Nordby worked a scoreless eight-pitch seventh inning that included one strike out. Junior right-hander
Jon Ludwig pitched for the first time since March 1 and went on to strike out the side in the eighth inning.
The Wolves used eight total pitchers in the game including four in the eighth inning alone. Junior left-hander
Jacob Conklin (0-2) took the loss after only lasting an inning and a third in his start, while giving up four runs on two hits and two walks. In total, the NSU pitching staff allowed 14 runs on 13 hits, eight walks and six Mavericks being hit by a pitch.
Minnesota State will host Upper Iowa in a four-game set on Saturday and Sunday in Mankato, Minn., at Bowyer Field. Games are slated for 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m., both days.
