Mavericks Take Two against Concordia-St. Paul on Friday

St. Paul, Minn. --- Minnesota State sweeps the doubleheader against Concordia-St. Paul on Friday to take the first two games in the four-game set. The Mavericks won game one 5-4 in 10 innings and game two 5-3.

Minnesota State (32-10, 23-7 NSIC) pushed enough runs across the plate to win two close games against the Golden Bears.

GAME 1 – Minnesota State 5, Concordia-St. Paul 4

Senior right fielder Jordan Hart becomes the single season RBI leader and junior second baseman Teddy Petersen gives the Mavericks the lead in the 10th inning for the win.

Minnesota State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as freshman shortstop Nick Altermatt reached on an infield single and ended up on third off an errant throw from the pitcher on a pick-off attempt. Hart brought Altermatt in for the run as Hart became the single season record holder for runs batted in on the play. Patrick Dockendorf (2012) originally held the record at 61 before Hart passed him with RBI number 62 on the season today.

The Mavericks score two runs with two outs to extend their lead to three run in the top of the third inning over the Golden Bears. With one out, senior catcher Tom Imholte reached on an error and Altermatt walked to put runners on first and second. Hart knocked in another run with a single to left center field with Imholte scoring and Altermatt being thrown out at the plate. Hart advanced to second on the throw to put him into scoring position for junior first baseman Ty Buck, who brought Hart in on a single to right center field.

Concordia-St. Paul scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to cut into the deficit. Senior left fielder Carter Schmidt reached on a fielder's choice that forced out freshman third baseman Jarod Wandersee at second base. Senior second baseman Isaac Hormann then doubled to put runners on second and third before junior shortstop Patrick Bordewick grounded out but brought in Schmidt to score. Senior designated hitter Ben Suits followed with a two out single and Hormann was cut down at the plate by senior left fielder Tyler Berg to prevent another run from scoring.

The Golden Bears took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring three runs on four hits and a Maverick error. Sophomore center fielder Ryan Christopher and senior first baseman Roch Whittaker hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. Senior right fielder Cole Kirchoff reached on a bunt single as well and a throwing error allowed all three runners to move up, including Christopher crossing the plate. Senior catcher Tom Austin hit the fourth consecutive for CSP bringing in Whittaker to score. Wandersee lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in the go-ahead run for the Golden Bears.

Minnesota State was able to tie the game up at four with a run in the top of the seventh inning and eventually forced extra innings. Berg started the inning with a bunt single and Imholte laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Berg to second. Altermatt brought the game-tying run in on a single through the left side for his third hit of the day.

Petersen won the game for the Mavericks in the top of the 10th inning on a solo home run. With one out, Petersen launched his fifth home run of the season over the right center field fence to give MSU the 5-4 lead.

Altermatt finished the game going three-for-four at the plate with an RBI as Buck and Petersen both had two hits with an RBI. Hart also finished with a team high two RBI in the game.

Minnesota State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning for the second time today off the bat of Hart. With two outs and no one on base, Hart cleared the right center field fence for his 16th home run this season.

Concordia-St. Paul bounced right back with three runs in the next half inning. Suits answered with his own home run down the right field line and brought in Hormann, who singled earlier in the inning. Christopher doubled and stole third base following the home run and Whittaker drove him on a single to right field.

The Mavericks pushed a run across in the top of the second inning to cut the deficit to one run.
