#10 Ohio State Defeats Minnesota State 3-2 in Overtime

Columbus, Ohio --- Minnesota State drops to #10 Ohio State 3-2 in overtime in game one of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Quarterfinals at the OSU Ice Rink, Friday night.

The Mavericks go to overtime for the fourth straight game, but are unable to hold on in the loss.

The Buckeyes were the first to strike as sophomore winger Tatum Skaggs deflected a shot past freshman netminder Abigail Levy 5:18 into the period. The Mavericks evened the score 1-1 at the 14:19 mark on a power play as freshman winger Brooke Bryant scored her 10th goal of the season. Bryant skated down from the neutral zone, past all four Ohio State skaters and scored on freshman netminder Andrea Braendli's right side. OSU took another one goal lead as sophomore blueliner Lisa Bruno hit on a slap shot near the blue line, past the screened Levy with a minute left to play in the period.

The second period went scoreless, but Minnesota State lit the lamp quickly in the third period. Just over a minute in, Bryant scored her second goal of the night and the team leading 11th of the season. Junior winger Emily Antony found Bryant streaking down the right side and she beat Braendli to the near post.

Ohio State scored quickly in overtime to win the game 3-2 and take game one of the best-of-three series. Sophomore forward Emma Maltais scored on a breakaway after a Minnesota State turnover. Levy saved the initial shot before Maltais poked the rebound in under her pads.

Freshman Abigail Levy finished the night with 39 saves as her record drops to 9-17-7 on the season. The Buckeyes out shot the Mavericks 42-21 and MSU converted on the only power play opportunity of the game.

Minnesota State and Ohio State will face off in game two of the series tomorrow, where MSU needs to win to keep its season alive. The puck will drop at 3:07 p.m. EST, at the OSU Ice Rink.
