Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth tie for the second straight day, this time 3-3 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action on Saturday at Verizon Center.
 
The one point moves Minnesota State to the sixth spot in the WCHA standings. This is the first time since the 2013-14 season where the Mavericks did not finish last in the WCHA. Seniors Katie Bidulka, Corbin Boyd, Lena Dusterhoft, Megan Hinze, Leila Kilduff, Rebekah Kolstad and Jordan McLaughlin were honored before the game on senior day.
 
The Bulldogs had a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play and outshot the Mavericks 15-8 in the period. Freshman winger Anneke Linser struck first at the 9:26 mark when she poked in a loose puck in from a scrum in front of the net. Freshman blueliner Maggie Flaherty continued her scoring weekend after she completed a two-on-one to the stick side freshman netminder Abigail Levy at the 12:15 mark.
 
Minnesota State was able to cut into the 2-0 deficit with freshman winger Madison Oelkers scoring her second goal of the season. Oelkers received the puck at the left hash mark and fired a wrister into the top right corner of the net. The Mavericks outshot the Bulldogs 13-6 in the period.
 
Minnesota Duluth was able to extend the lead to 3-1 one minute into the third period. Junior winger Sydney Brodt got the puck after a face-off win and chipped a shot over the shoulder of Levy. The Maverick comeback was on and Oelkers scored her second goal of the game and third of the season at the 11:12 mark. Oelkers took a shot from a bad angle and hit a Bulldog skater before it went past junior netminder Maddie Rooney for the goal. With just over two minutes left in the period and down a skater, the Mavericks were able to score their first short-handed goal of the season. Freshman winger Claire Butorac received a back tap from sophomore blueliner Tristen Truax and threw a changeup at Rooney, beating her to the low left corner for her first short-handed goal of her career and second goal on the season.
 
Minnesota State went to overtime for the third straight game and came away with a tie both times against Minnesota Duluth. UMD ended up winning the shootout 1-0 on the third and final round.
 
Freshman Abigail Levy saved 31 shots and her record moves to 9-16-7 on the season. MSU outshot UMD 38-24 and killed all five penalties on the day.

No. 6 seed Minnesota State will travel to No. 3 seed Ohio State for the first round of the WCHA tournament. A best-of-three series will be played March 1-3 at times to be determined.
