MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team will wrap up its homestand Saturday as it takes on the Crown College Storm. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., at Taylor Center.
Minnesota State History: The 2019-20 season marks the 98th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,355-903 (.600) in 2,258 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 169-69 (.710) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.
The Mavericks made their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. MSU owns an 18-15 record (.545) in NCAA Tournament play, including a 91-62 loss to Northwest Missouri State in 2019.
Against the Storm: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and Crown College will be their second meeting all-time. In their previous meeting during the 2008-09 season, the Mavericks defeated the Storm 111-43 at Taylor Center.
Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State improved to 1-2 last weekend as it defeated St. Cloud State 73-61 in a nonconference meeting at Taylor Center.
As a team, MSU has averaged 71.0 points and 45.0 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 39.8% from the field. The Mavericks have passed out 36 assists and have recorded 22 blocks.
Four Mavericks are averaging 11.0 points or more per game this season, including senior
Cameron Kirksey who is posting a team-best 17.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Freshman
Ryland Holt has averaged 14.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as well, while senior
Kevin Krieger has tallied 11.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Sophomore
Kelby Kramer has notched 6.7 points, 13.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game also.
The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 19th season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 394-167 (.702).
Concerning the Storm: As of Nov. 19, Crown College owns a 1-2 record on the season, including a 68-52 loss to Saint Mary's in its most recent outing. The Storm will take on Buena Vista and Macalster before squaring off with the Mavericks this Saturday.
As a team, Crown has averaged 72.3 points and 38.0 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 45.1% from the field. The Storm is also shooting 34.4% from long range and has passed out 39 steals. The Storm has also posted 39 turnovers.
Tim Wendel leads the team with 25.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. Gunnar Ledin has averaged 21.0 points per game as well.
Crown College is coached by Luke Herbert, who is in his fourth season with the program. He owns a 39-42 record.
