Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team battled with #9 Ohio State to a 3-3 tie Saturday afternoon at Mankato Civic Center.

The Mavericks record is 2-4-2 (0-4-2-2 WCHA) after the tie and ended up taking four out of the six possible points against the nationally ranked Buckeyes over the weekend. MSU picked up the extra conference point in the shootout win after the two scoreless overtime periods. 

The Buckeyes lit the lamp first as junior winger Tatum Skaggs was the beneficiary of a two-on-one break with junior linemate Emma Maltais at the 17:23 mark. The Mavericks evened the score at the 12:31 with a man advantage due to an interference penalty by OSU. Senior captain McKenzie Sederberg took a shot from the blue line that was saved by sophomore netminder Andrea Braendli, but senior winger Sofia Poinar poked in the loose puck in the crease for the goal for her first goal of the season.

Minnesota State held the 3-2 lead after the second period with MSU outscoring OSU 2-1 in the second stanza. The Mavericks took the 2-1 lead at the 5:16 mark when sophomore winger Brooke Bryant went top shelf from the right face-off circle for her first goal of the season. MSU extended its lead to two goals as junior blueliner Tristen Truax beat Braendli on a breakaway, top shelf for her first goal of the season. Ohio State cut into the lead at the 18:18 mark as senior blueliner Jincy Dunne scored in the low right corner, while freshman netminder Calla Frank was being screened.
 
The Buckeyes scored the lone goal in the third period to force the tie. Dunne scored her second goal of the game after taking a cross-ice pass from Skaggs and beat Frank to her stick side. The overtime periods went scoreless as MSU outshot OSU 3-1 in the two extra periods.

The shootout went four rounds as the Mavericks took the extra point by winning two rounds to one. For Ohio State, Maltais scored in the first round and then Frank saved the next three attempts for MSU. Freshman winger Kelsey King came up big again by tying the shootout 1-1 after the first round and then senior forward Emily Antony deked Braendli for the shootout winner.

Freshman Calla Frank (1-2-1) made a career-high 38 saves through regulation and the first overtime period in the tie.

Minnesota State was outshot by Ohio State by a 41-28 margin. MSU went one-for-two on the power play, while OSU converted on zero of its three chances.
 
The Mavericks hit the road next week with a series against St. Cloud State in Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Oct. 25-26.
