Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team played to a 1-1 tie with #9 Ohio State Friday afternoon at Manakto Civic Center.

The Mavericks record is 2-4-1 (0-4-1-1 WCHA) after the tie. MSU picked up the extra conference point after scoring in the second overtime. The new rule was implemented this season in the WCHA for the women and this was the first time the Mavericks played the extra three-on-three period.  

The Mavericks were sent to the penalty box 2:53 into the first period and the Buckeyes converted on the power play. Sophomore defenseman Madison Bizal scored the goal for OSU right outside of the crease with traffic blocking sophomore netminder Abigail Levy.

Minnesota State tied the game up in the second period on sophomore winger Claire Butorac's third goal of the season. Butorac and sophomore line partner Brooke Bryant went back and forth on a two-on-one break with Butorac beating sophomore netminder Andrea Braendli to her stick side.

The third period went scoreless as Levy made 12 saves in the period to force overtime with the Buckeyes. The game finished officially as a tie after the first overtime period went scoreless with both teams putting two shots on net.
 
The game went into the second overtime period, which is three-on-three action, for the first time in Maverick women hockey history. The new overtime rule worked in favor of the Mavericks as freshman winger Kelsey King scored a goal for the extra conference point. King stole the puck at mid-ice, drove down the right side of the ice and went five-hole on Braendli for the goal.

Sophomore Abigail Levy (1-2-1) made 34 saves through regulation and the first overtime period in the tie with the Buckeyes.

Minnesota State was outshot by Ohio State by a 35-27 margin. MSU went zero-for-three on the power play, while OSU converted on one of its four chances.
 
The Mavericks and the Buckeyes will face-off again tomorrow in the series finale in Mankato Civic Center at 2:07 p.m.
