Mavericks Resume NSIC South Division Action at Wildcats, Vikings

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team will head back on the road this weekend as it takes on the Wayne State Wildcats on Saturday and the Augustana Vikings on Sunday. Tip-offs are scheduled for 5:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m., respectively.

Minnesota State History: The 2018-19 season marks the 97th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,348-895 (.600) in 2,243 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 163-65 (.714) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

The Mavericks made their 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. MSU owns an 18-14 record (.562) in NCAA Tournament play, including its 60-50 win over Northwest Missouri State, a 74-70 win over Southwest Minnesota State and a 90-83 loss to Northern State last season.

Against the Wildcats: Saturday's game between Minnesota State and Wayne State will be their 28th meeting, with MSU leading the all-time series 24-3. The Mavericks have won their last 12 games against the Wildcats, including a pair of wins last season.

Last season, the Mavericks averaged 80.5 points and 40.5 rebounds per game against the Wildcats, while shooting 49.6% from the field. MSU also connected on 17-of-32 (.531) attempts from three point range.

Junior Kevin Krieger averaged a team-leading 18.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game against WSC last season. Senior Carlos Anderson averaged 10.0 points and 3.0 rebounds a game, while junior Cameron Kirksey tallied 8.5 and 7.5 rebounds a game as well.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 20-1 record against Wayne State, including a 9-0 record on the road.

Against the Vikings: Sunday's game between Minnesota State and Augustana will be their 117th encounter, with MSU leading the all-time series 64-52. MSU won both meetings last season, including a 94-91 overtime road victory.

Junior Kevin Krieger averaged 21.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last season against the Vikings, while junior Carlos Anderson tallied 15.5 points per game. Junior Cameron Kirksey notched 15.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as well.

As a team, MSU shot 48.8% from the field against AU, while averaging 92.0 points and 37.0 rebounds a game. The Mavericks also took advantage of 49-of-61 (.803) shots from the free throw line.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the weekend the owner of a 12-6 record and sits in a tie for third place in the NSIC standings with an 8-4 conference record. Last weekend, the Mavericks fell to Minnesota Duluth 80-77 and St. Cloud State 77-74 in overtime.

So far this season, MSU is averaging 82.8 points and 38.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 45.3% from the field. The Mavericks have connected on 169 three pointers this season and have passed out 261 assists.

Four Mavericks are averaging more than 13 points a game this season, including junior Cameron Kirksey who is averaging a team-best 16.9  points per game, to go along with 5.7 rebounds a game. Senior Carlos Anderson is posting 14.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while junior Kevin Krieger is averaging 13.6 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds a game. Junior Juwan McCloud is recording 13.2 points and 3.2 assists a game as well.

The Mavericks are led by Matt Margenthaler, who is in his 18th season at Minnesota State. He owns a career record of 387-159 (.708).
    
Concerning the Wildcats: Wayne State enters the weekend the owner of a 14-4 record and sits in second place in the NSIC standings with a 9-3 conference record. Last weekend on the road, WSC fell to MSU Moorhead 80-76, before besting Northern State 84-81.
 
Wayne State is averaging 80.0 points and 36.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 48.5% from the field. The Wildcats have also passed out 224 assists and have forced 268 turnovers.

Four Wildcats are netting more than 10 points a game this season, including Trevin Joseph who is boasting a team-leading 17.7 points per game. Kendall Jacks is averaging 15.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, while Jordan Janssen has tallied 10.3 points and a team-best 7.2 rebounds per game.

Wayne State is coached by Jeff Kaminsky, who is in his third season with the Wildcats. He owns a 38-40 (.487) record.

Concerning the Vikings: Augustana enters the weekend the owner of a 12-6 record, and sits in a tie for third place in the NSIC standings with an 8-4 league record. Last weekend on the road, AU fell to Northern State 97-66 before besting MSU Moorhead 87-82.

Augustana is averaging 78.1 points and 38.8 rebounds per game this season and is shooting 44.6% from the field and 39.2% from three point range. The Vikings has also passed out 230 assists and have forced 173 turnovers.

Tyler Riemersma is leads the Vikings with 17.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Matt Cartwright is netting 16.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, while AJ Plitzuweit has posted 13.8 points and 3.8 assists a game.

Augustana is coached by Tom Billeter who is in his 16th season with the Vikings. He owns a 299-172 (.634) record with AU.
