Minnesota State Wins on Hockey Day over Bemidji State 2-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. --- Minnesota State won on Hockey Day in Minnesota over Bemidji State 2-1 Saturday afternoon at an outdoor rink next to Bemidji Lake.

A goal in the second period by sophomore forward Brittyn Fleming proved to be the game winner over the Beavers.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early advantage as freshman winger Brooke Bryant scored her seventh goal of the season, which is tied for most on the team. Junior winger Emily Antony forced a turnover, won a battle on the boards and then passed it up to Bryant. Then Bryant faked out a defender and beat the Beaver netminder, Lauren Bench one-on-one, top shelf over her glove. Bemidji State turned around and tied the game up at the 12:45 mark in the period on a power play goal. Sophomore defenseman Mak Langel shot from the blue line as Maverick goaltender Abigail Levy was screened and did not see the puck.

At the 16:19 mark in the second period, Minnesota State took the lead for good on a tip in goal from sophomore forward Brittyn Fleming. Antony took a shot from the blue line on the left side and Fleming tipped the puck out of the air, through the legs of the Beaver goaltender. Fleming's sixth goal of the season was the last goal scored as the third period went scoreless.

Freshman Abigail Levy made 21 saves throughout the game and now has a record of 9-11-4 on the season.

The Mavericks were outshot by the Beavers 22-20 and BSU went one-for-one on the power play, while not committing a penalty themselves.

Minnesota State (9-11-4, 3-10-2-1 WCHA) will face Bemidji State again in a home WCHA series next weekend at Verizon Center. The games will begin at 7:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m., on Jan. 25-26, respectively.
