MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State dropped the series opener to Bemidji State 5-2 Friday night at Verizon Center.
Bemidji State won the battle in front of the net, scoring three of its five goals in the crease.
The Beavers scored twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Junior winger
Abby Halluska tipped in a save of the pads of freshman netminder
Abigail Levy at the 12:34 mark. Freshman forward
Graysen Myers scored her first collegiate goal at the 18:46 mark when she scored on the backside of the goal off the pass from senior winger
Sylvia Marlot.
Both teams scored a goal in the second period as BSU struck for the third time at the 10:39 mark when sophomore forward
Clair DeGeorge put back a rebound. The Mavericks got on the board four minutes later when freshman winger
Brooke Bryant scored her team leading eighth goal of the season. Sophomore forward
Brittyn Fleming picked up a loose puck in the center of the ice and slipped it to Bryant on the left side of the net for the goal.
Minnesota State was able to pull within a goal at the 15:07 mark in the third period as junior winger
Emily Antony connected on a power play goal for her first goal of the season. Senior blueliner
Megan Hinze took a shot from the point and Antony was able to tip the puck out of the air into the net. A minute later, Bemidji State stormed back with a power play goal of its own as sophomore winger
Paige Beebe won a battle at the front of the net for the goal. With less than two minutes left in the period, the Beavers added an empty net goal from Beebe to make the final score 5-2.
Freshman
Abigail Levy stopped 27 shots in the loss and now has a record of 9-12-4 on the season.
Bemidji State outshot Minnesota State 32-27 in the game and both teams scored a power play goal with MSU having two chances and BSU having four chances.
The Mavericks (9-12-4, 3-11-2-1 WCHA) and the Beavers will meet again tomorrow in the series finale starting at 3:07 p.m., at Verizon Center.
