Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's basketball team (5-10, 2-9 NSIC) lost in overtime to the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (10-4, 9-2 NSIC) 72-66 Friday night at Taylor Center.
In the opening quarter of the game the Mavericks and Bulldogs looked to move the ball up and down the floor and Minnesota Duluth came out of the quarter with an 18-17 lead.
The second quarter saw the Mavericks slow the pace of the game down and focus on getting the ball down to the post in half-court sets.

Kristi Fett in the post on back-to-back possessions where
Fett was able to make contested lay-ins. A couple of three-point shots made by the Bulldogs did give them a 33-28 lead going into halftime.
The Mavericks held the edge in the first half in shooting from the floor making 46.2% compared to 44.8% for the Bulldogs as well as making all four of their free-throw attempts.
Taylor Drost led Minnesota State in scoring with six points while
Fett and
Rachel Shumski each added four.
In the third quarter the Bulldogs grew their lead to 51-40 with an efficient offensive stretch.
The Mavericks cut the Bulldogs lead down four points in the opening minutes of the quarter with a 9-2 run punctuated by
Drost drilling a three-pointer at the top right of key. Out of the media timeout Minnesota State kept the going, tying the game and taking the lead on back-to-back possessions where
Brooke Tonsfeldt took control of the ball and sunk short attempts. The Bulldogs were able to tie the game with 30 seconds to go but the Mavericks were not able to get a shot to go in the final seconds, forcing the game into overtime.
In the extra time the Mavericks offense came from having
Drost attack the rim and get to the line where she made her first five attempts. The Bulldogs were able to get inside though and build a 65-62 lead with 49.7 to go and managed to hit a three-pointer at the buzzer and extend their lead to six points with 20.3 to go. This would prove too much to overcome and Minnesota Duluth came away with the 72-66 win.
Drost led the Mavericks with 18 points on the night while adding three rebounds and a block and
Monica Muth added 14 points as well as four rebounds and two assists. Minnesota State out-shot Minnesota Duluth 45.3% to 39.7% from the field and made 16-18 free throw attempts compared to 16-22 from the Bulldogs.
The Mavericks will host St. Cloud State tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. The game Saturday will also feature a celebration at halftime of the ten-year anniversary of the Minnesota State Women's Basketball 2009 National Championship team.
