Mankato, Minn. --- Lindsey Coleman scored 29 seconds into regulation and Minnesota State women's hockey never looked back as it upset No. 5 Ohio State 4-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play on Friday evening at Verizon Center.
Minnesota State (5-23-1, 3-18-0-0 WCHA) received two goals from Coleman, a senior forward, the game-winning goal from senior forward
Amanda Conway, an insurance goal from junior forward
Rebekah Kolstad and two assists from freshman forward
Brittyn Fleming, while sophomore goaltender
Chloe Crosby (4-9-1) stifled the Ohio State (19-8-4, 12-5-4-3 WCHA) attack with 35 saves.
Coleman scored 29 seconds into the game after an extra pass from junior forward
Jordan McLaughlin got Ohio State's goaltender,
Amanda Zeglen (2-1-0), out of position – allowing Coleman to finish into an open net. McLaughlin and Fleming assisted on the goal. Minnesota State extended its lead to 2-0 before the first intermission. After sophomore forward
Sofia Poinar took a shot from the right circle, Conway banged home the rebound at the 14:59 mark.
The two teams traded goals in the second period to give the Mavericks a 3-1 lead after 40:00 of play.
Grace Zarzecki scored for the Buckeyes at the 7:13 mark, but Coleman answered back with her second goal of the game – her fifth of the season – at 8:22. Fleming had a breakaway attempt that was stopped by Zeglen, but the Buckeye's goaltender ended up on her back and was unable to control the rebound as Coleman crashed the net to record her first career multi-goal game. Junior defenseman
Megan Hinze garnered the secondary assist.
In the third period, Crosby made 15 stops for a total of 35 for the game and Kolstad added the Mavericks' final goal– her second of the season – at 13:43 to make the final score 4-1. Sophomore defenseman
McKenzie Sederberg chipped the puck ahead to Kolstad in the Mavericks' defensive zone. Kolstad skated the puck down the ice and, going towards the left side of the net, backhanded a shot that snuck through Zeglen's five-hole as she shifted in the net. Sederberg was credited with the assist.
The Minnesota State defense blocked 25 shots, including seven by senior defenseman and team captain
Anna Keys, and five by Hinze.
Fleming increased her team-leading assist and point totals to 15 and 19, respectively.
Each team went 0-of-3 on the power play.
The Mavericks were outshot 36-20 in the game.
Minnesota State goes for the WCHA series sweep of Ohio State at 2:07 p.m., on Saturday at Verizon Center.
