Winning Streak Ends as Beavers Hand Mavericks 4-2 Loss Saturday

Mankato, Minn. ---  Minnesota State saw its winning streak end at seven games, falling to Bemidji State by a 4-2 margin Saturday in Bemidji.

The Beavers scored twice early in the game and never trailed in the contest in claiming the win over the #3 Mavericks.

Just 53 seconds into the contest winger Adam Brady used a screen to wire a shot that beat Maverick netminder Mathias Israelsson high on the glove side as the Beavers quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead.  Then, at the 5:50 mark, Nick Cardelli scored on a similar shot from the slot and at the end of twenty minutes of action, Bemidji State headed into the locker room owning a 2-0 lead.

The Mavericks battled back in the second period and at 14:50, junior defenseman Edwin Hookenson boomed a shot from the point that beat BSU netminder Zach Driscoll for his first career power play goal.

The two teams traded goals early in the final period of regulation.  A deflection by big forward Jay Dickman at 3:39 gave the Beavers a two-goal edge, but Minnesota State pulled within one at 7:09 after Charlie Gerard snapped the puck past Driscoll on the stick side after taking a cross-ice pass from Marc Michaelis for a power play marker.   BSU's Aaron Miller tallied an empty net goal at 18:53 to close out the scoring in the contest.

Freshman Dryden McKay (3-2-0 overall), who replaced Mathias Israelsson following BSU's second goal, stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced in 51:50 of action.  Israelsson was credited with three saves on five shots.

With the loss the Mavericks drop to 10-2-0 (5-1-0 WCHA).

The Mavericks continue league action next week with a road series at Lake Superior State on the docket for Friday and Saturday.
