#3 Minnesota State Overpowers Ferris State in 7-1 Win Friday

Mankato, Minn. --- Third-rated Minnesota State got three-point nights from three different players in skating to a 7-1 home league win over Ferris State Friday night.

The Mavericks scored three goals in the first period and never looked back by tying a season high seven goals in their fifth straight win.

Ferris State left Maverick junior forward Nick Rivera unmanned as he skated to the front of the net and beat Bulldog netminder Roni Salmenkanga for his third goal of the season to open the scoring at 7:30 of the first period. At the 12:53 minute mark, the Mavericks converted on a power-play opportunity when sophomore forward Dallas Gerads took a pass from junior Charlie Gerard rifled a shot to the top left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season. The final goal of the period came at 15:38 when junior winger Parker Toumie tallied his sixth goal of the season off a shot from sophomore defenseman Connor Mackey.

Forty seconds into the second period, Minnesota State scored its fourth goal of the game as Mackey found junior Marc Michaelis sitting alone in front of the net. This was Michaelis' sixth goal of the season. Sophomore blueliner Jack McNeely got in on the scoring action as well with less than a minute to play in the period. McNeely's first collegiate goal came on a two-on-one break with senior Max Coatta feeding him the puck to make it a 5-0 Maverick lead.

Minnesota State lost the shutout at the 7:14 mark of the third period when Ferris State's Jacob Hetz was able to beat senior netminder Mathias Israelsson. The Mavericks converted on a five-on-three power-play opportunity at 9:47 when Michaelis scored off a rebound. While the teams were playing four-on-four, Spooner scored his second goal of the season off of a great pass from freshman forward Julian Napravnik, who threw a back-handed pass across the ice before Spooner ripped a one-timer into the net.

Israelsson finished the night stopping 17 of 18 shot attempts and moves to 5-0-0 on the season with the win.

Michaelis had three points on the night with two goals and an assist. Toumie also had three points with a goal and two assists and leads the Mavericks in scoring on the season with 6-10--16 in nine games. Mackey, who was +4 in the win, finished the game with three assists and now has eight helpers on the year.

Minnesota State moves to 8-1-0 (3-0-0 WCHA) on the season with the win, while Ferris State drops to 4-7-0 (2-3-0 WCHA).

The Mavericks and Bulldogs will be back in action tomorrow night, beginning at 7:07 p.m., at Verizon Center.
