#22 Mavericks upend the Golden Bears

ST. PAUL, Minn.--- No. 22 Minnesota State (10-1-1, 8-0-1 NSIC) comes back to defeat Concordia-St. Paul (7-2-3, 4-2-3 NSIC) 3-1 on Tuesday night in Sea Foam Stadium.
 
The Golden Bears struck first early in the first half with a goal from Jordan Rowan-Stafford in the seventh minute. With the rain falling persistently, the Mavericks were able to storm back and score a couple goals themselves in the first half. The first of the Mavericks goals came in the 19th minute when sophomore Molly Riley was able to get behind the defense off a big bounce from the ball and put it in the bottom right corner past the keeper. This was Riley's fifth goal of the season with the assist going to junior Dakota Wendell. The second goal was scored by Mankato native freshman Jenny Vetter in the 28th minute when a cross came from right to left and Vetter was able to slip it into the bottom left corner. This was her first goal as a Maverick and the assist came from sophomore Molly Sarafolean to help the Mavericks take a 2-1 lead into the half.
 
In the second half, the Mavericks scored an insurance goal to extend the lead to 3-1. Wendell scored her team leading seventh goal in the 51st minute, firing it high over the keeper's head from 25 yards out. MSU controlled the pace for the rest of the second half, not letting CSP get a chance at scoring a goal.
 
Overall, the Mavericks outshot the Golden Bears 13-5 (6-3 on goal), holding CSP to one shot in the second half.
 
Junior Alexa Rabune made two saves on three opportunities while her counterparts Emily Nelson and Jordyn Clark made three save on six opportunities.
 
This win was the 100th victory for Head Coach Brian Bahl in his career here at Minnesota State. This is Bahl's sixth year leading the program and it look 123 matches for him to reach 100 wins. The Mavericks have won at a 85.8% rate overall with coach Bahl at the helm and they have also won 92.3% of NSIC matches under his coaching.
 
The Mavericks will head out on the road for two more matches this week starting in Crookston, Minn., on Friday at 3:00 p.m., against Minnesota Crookston. MSU will then head to Bemidji, Minn., in a top 25 battle with No. 5 Bemidji State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
