Mavericks' Comeback Attempt Falls Short in 3-1 Loss to Huskies

St. Cloud, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey was unable to overcome a two-goal deficit and suffered a 3-1 setback against St. Cloud State in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play on Saturday afternoon inside Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

After Minnesota State (3-18-1, 1-13-0-0 WCHA) and St. Cloud State (5-14-2, 3-11-2-0 WCHA) played a scoreless first period, St. Cloud State's Kayla Friesen scored the only goal of the second period at the 9:29 mark – putting Minnesota State down 1-0 at the second intermission.
 
The third period saw a flurry of action as the two teams combined for three goals. The Mavericks outshot the Huskies 15-7 in the period, but were outscored 2-1 in the final 20:00 of play to make the final score 3-1 in favor of the Huskies. The Huskies' Hallie Theodosopoulos scored at 5:01 of the period to put the Mavericks down 2-0. Freshman forward Brittyn Fleming tallied her fourth goal and team-leading 15th point of the season for the Mavericks at the 9:16 mark to make the score 2-1. A power-play goal, Fleming's score was assisted by senior defenseman Anna Keys and junior defenseman Megan Hinze. However, the Maverick comeback attempt came up short as the Huskies' Hannah Potrykus scored an empty goal at 19:38 – coming on a Huskies' power play.  
 
Shots on goal were 34-25 in favor of Minnesota State.  
 
Junior goaltender Katie Bidulka (1-13-0) made 22 saves for the Mavericks, while Emma Polusny (4-5-1) stopped 33 shots for the Huskies.
 
Both teams went 1-of-3 on the power play.
 
Minnesota State returns to the ice for a two-game WCHA series at Wisconsin next weekend.
