Mavericks Drop Series Opener at No. 7 Gophers 4-2

Truax Records First Career Multi-Goal Game

Minneapolis, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey suffered a 4-2 setback in the first game of a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with No. 7 Minnesota at Ridder Arena on Friday evening.  
 
Minnesota State (3-21-1, 1-16-0-0 WCHA) was outshot by Minnesota (18-8-2, 11-6-2-0 WCHA) 10-5 in the first period, but Minnesota State scored the only goal to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Freshman forward Tristen Truax took a pass in the slot from junior forward Rebekah Kolstad and unleashed a wrist shot top shelf for her first of two goals on the evening.
 
The Mavericks' lead did not last long as the Gophers scored three times in the second period to put the Mavericks down 3-1 at the second intermission. Caitlin Reilly scored the first goal 26 seconds into the period. Grace Zumwinkle scored the next goal at 8:53 of the period, followed Emily Brown's goal at the 10:26 mark. The Mavericks trailed 23-11 in shots on goal after two periods.
 
In the third stanza, the Mavericks would not go away. Truax scored her second goal of the evening for her first collegiate multi-goal game when she one timed a pass from senior forward Hannah Davidson at the 12:19 mark. 
 
The Mavericks continued applying pressure, but were unable to find the equalizer. The Mavericks pulled their goaltender at 18:52 and the Gophers' Taylor Wente scored an empty-net goal at 19:27 to make the final score 4-2.     
 
Sophomore netminder Chloe Crosby made 25 saves for the Mavericks and Sidney Peters stopped 15 shots for the Gophers.    
 
The Mavericks were outshot 29-17.
 
Each team finished 0-of-1 on the power play.
 
The Mavericks and Golden Gophers conclude their two-game WCHA series at Ridder Arena on Saturday at 4:07 p.m.
