Minneapolis, Minn. --- Sophomore goaltender
Chloe Crosby made a season-high 36 saves, but Minnesota State women's hockey lost 2-0 in the finale of a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with No. 7 Minnesota at Ridder Arena on Saturday evening.
Minnesota State (3-22-1, 1-17-0-0 WCHA) and Minnesota (19-8-2, 12-6-2-0 WCHA) played a scoreless first period with Minnesota holding a 13-10 edge in shots on goal.
In the second period, the Mavericks surrendered a goal to the Golden Gophers'
Cara Piazza at 16:58. Piazza one-timed a shot from the slot over the shoulder of Crosby (2-8-1) to make the score 1-0 going into the second intermission. The Mavericks trailed 22-20 in shots on goal at the end of two.
The Maverick kept fighting in the third period, but were unable to solve
Sidney Peters (12-6-1), the Golden Gophers' goaltender, who made 32 saves in the shutout. The Golden Gophers scored a late insurance goal when
Alex Woken stuffed in her own rebound at 18:18 – making the final score 2-0. Fifteen of Crosby's 36 saves came in the final period.
The Mavericks, who tallied at least 30 shots on goal for the fifth time this season, were outshot 38-32.
The Mavericks finished 0-of-2 on the power play and the Gophers went 0-of-3. The Mavericks limited the Gophers to seven power-play shots and successfully killed off a five-minute major.
Minnesota State returns home for a six-game homestand to end the regular season – beginning with a two-game WCHA series against Bemidji State next weekend at Verizon Center.
