No. 19 Minnesota State Baseball Records Two Comeback Victories on Saturday

Mavericks Complete Four-Game Series Sweep of Bemidji State

Bemidji, Minn. --- For the second time in as many days, No. 19 Minnesota State baseball swept a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Bemidji State at BSU Baseball Field.

The Mavericks (34-7, 29-3 NSIC) defeated Bemidji State (13-27, 10-18 NSIC) 7-6 in game one and 4-3 in game two on Saturday. The Mavericks won both games in come-from-behind fashion.

GAME 1 – No. 19 Minnesota State 7, Bemidji State 6

The Mavericks scored the final seven runs of the game – all on home runs – to erase a six-run deficit and win game one 7-6.

The Beaver offense scored three runs in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth off of Maverick starting pitcher Dalton Roach, who was tagged with six earned runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Roach, who struck out four and walked none, would not factor into the decision.

The Mavericks started their comeback with three runs in the fifth inning. With junior center fielder Josh Wenzel and junior catcher Ryan Moffett on base, junior first baseman Dylan Dresel launched his ninth home run of the season – tied for the team lead with Wenzel – to make the score 6-3.

Minnesota State pulled within one run of the Beavers when Moffett connected for a two-run home run – his second of 2017 – in the sixth inning to make the score 6-5.

In the seventh inning, the Mavericks tied the game and took the lead for the first time in the game when sophomore right fielder Jordan Hart and freshman second baseman Tommy McDonald hit back-to-back solo homers to start the inning – putting the Mavericks up 7-6. Hart's home run was his seventh of the season and McDonald's was his fourth.

Junior southpaw Aaron Rozek (2-1), who has yet to allow an earned run in 20 1/3 innings this season, did the rest – pitching a scoreless sixth and seventh innings to pick up the win. Rozek struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Sophomore right-hander Bobby Gauvreau also pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings in relief for the Mavericks.

Logan Riedel (2-4) was charged with the loss – giving up two earned runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings in relief.

Connor McNallan started on the rubber for the Beavers and surrendered five runs on five hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings. McNallan, who struck out four, did not factor into the decision.

GAME 2 – No. 19 Minnesota State 4, Bemidji State 3

Senior starting pitcher Mitchell Bauer (7-0) allowed single runs to the Beavers in the first and second, but settled down to throw 8 1/3 innings and the offense brought the Mavericks back for a 4-3 comeback victory in game two.

Trailing 2-0 after two innings, Minnesota State tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning – on an RBI triple and an RBI double off the bats of freshman left fielder Teddy Petersen and junior first baseman Dylan Dresel, respectively.

Bauer kept the game tied for the Mavericks – holding Bemidji State to three runs (two earned) over 8 1/3 innings, while striking out six and walking none.

Senior Hunter Walsh put the Mavericks up 3-2 with a pinch-hit solo homer – his fourth of the season – in the top of the ninth inning. Later in the inning, junior catcher Ryan Moffett scored the eventual-deciding run on a passed ball and the Mavericks led 4-2.

After the Beavers scored one run in the bottom of the ninth to cut the Maverick lead to 4-3, junior southpaw Aaron Rozek took the mound to retire the final two batters of the game and earn the save – his second of the season.

Ryan Fransen, who started on the mound for Bemidji State, held the Mavericks to two earned runs on 12 hits over seven innings, but received a no-decision. Fransen struck out five without walking a batter.

Relief pitcher Alec Meyer was charged with the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in 1 1/3 innings. He recorded all four of his outs on strikeouts.

Minnesota State returns to the diamond for the start of its final-home regular-season NSIC series of 2017 with a doubleheader against Upper Iowa on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
