Emporia, Kan.--- The Minnesota State women's track and field team took first place with 94.50 points in their first outdoor meet of the season, the ESU Spring Invitational hosted by Emporia State University.
The day started with a record breaking performance as newly crowned NCAA DII indoor 60-meter hurdle champion
Altoniece Williams shattered the school record for the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.78, winning the event. The previous record was held by
Luonna VanMeveren set in 1988 with a time of 14.21.
Carolyn Hackel also finished second in the 100-meter hurdle with a time of 14.43. In the 400-meter dash
Kimmy Wreh (59.15) finished seventh. The Mavericks claimed the top two spots in the 100-meter dash thanks to
Afure Adah (11.72) and
Karlona Gregory (11.84), and
Autumn Santos (12.05) finished seventh.
Bobbi Patrick finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.59.
Taylor Glover took first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.57. In the same event
Sophia Simonson (1:05.24) and
Brooke Foreman (1:06.25) finished third and sixth.
Adah continued her strong day claiming first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.253.
In the high jump,
Rachel Schumacher finished seventh with a height of 5'2.25".
Faryn Wirkus finished second in the pole vault with a top jump of 12'3.50". In the long jump,
Brieanna Puckett finished second with a leap of 19'4".
Emma Edelen finished ninth in
the hammer throw with a distance of 144'7". In the Javelin throw
Kaitlyn Smith finished sixth with a throw of 133'10".
Sarah Knutson finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 40'7.50".
Minnesota State will continue next Friday and Saturday with the Ashley Nalley Heptathlon/ Herschel Niel Decathlon in Maryville, Mo.
