SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team split a pair of NSIC duals on Saturday as it fell to MSU Moorhead 5-4, before defeating the University of Mary 7-2.
Minnesota State now owns a 2-5 overall record, including a 2-4 NSIC record.
The Mavericks began the day with a close 5-4 loss to MSU Moorhead.
The Mavericks jumped out to an early 2-1 lead as they won two of the three doubles matches. The duo of senior
Melissa Mashburn and sophomore
Erin Streeter defeated Chessa Jones and Jessamy Jones 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles match, while senior
Abby Schmidt and freshman
Monika Ryan bested Ricquel Ramsbottom and Maria Moral Carretero 8-3 in the No. 3 doubles match.
The Dragons were able to rally in the singles matches as they took four out of six to win the dual 5-4. Mashburn won the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-1 against Ramsbottom, while junior
Lisa Dobbelaere won the No. 6 singles match against Emma Zamora by the scored of 6-3, 6-0.
After dropping a close one to the Dragons, the Mavericks rebounded with a 7-2 win against the University of Mary.
MSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as it swept the doubles matches against U-Mary. Streeter and Mashburn defeated Catherine Gibbons and Eileen Leong 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles match, while senior
Kelly Lechowski and freshman
Kelly Spielman bested Meredith Holt and Lucia Bolibruch 8-6 in the second doubles match. Ryan and Schmidt finished the No. 3 doubles match with an 8-3 win over Lisa Anderson and Shanna Stevenson as well.
The Mavericks then went on to win four of the six singles matches against the Marauders to lock down their 7-2 win. Mashburn bested Holt 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) in the No. 2 singles match, while Ryan defeated Bolibruch 6-2, 6-1 in the third singles match. Junior
Killian Doran won the No. 4 singles match 6-3, 6-0 against Anastasia Bruss, while Schmidt defeated Danielle Wolf 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles match.
The Mavericks return to action on Monday, March 6 as they take on Findlay in Orlando, Fla.
