Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

#8 Mavericks Overpower Lakers 7-0

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. ---   #8 Minnesota State got two goals apiece from Ian Scheid and  Parker Tuomie in skating to a 7-0 win at Lake Superior State in a  Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Combined with Friday's 5-1 win, the Mavericks swept the two-game league road series in upping their record to 11-5-0, 9-3-0 WCHA.

A pair of goals gave the visiting Mavericks a 2-0 cushion after the first 20 minutes of action.  Senior forward Max Coatta worked along the boards in the offensive zone before feeding freshman winger Dallas Gerads, who buried the puck for his first career marker at 4:01.  Then, with 12.7 left on the clock and the Mavericks on the power play, senior right wing Zeb Knutson wristed a shot along the ice from the point through a slew of legs and sticks that found the back of the net. The goal was Knutson's fifth point of the weekend (he had a goal and three assists in Friday's 5-1 victory).

Sophomore defenseman Ian Scheid scored back-to-back goals and freshman forward Parker Tuomie chipped in with one of his own as Minnesota State widened the gap to 5-0 before the end of the second stanza.

Scheid tallied on a power play rebound chance at 5:22 and then again at 6:54 on a shot from the blue line that went in just under the cross bar.  The Coon Rapids, Minn., native now has seven goals on the year.  Tuomie notched his second goal of the weekend and third of the year when he converted on a power play chance14:33.

Tuomie, again with the Mavericks on the power play, with a blast from the left circle at 10:31 of the third made it 6-0. Senior forward Brad McClure closed out the scoring in the game with a nifty move in front of the net at 17:50 for his fourth goal of the season.

Senior netminder Connor Lacouvee, who was making his 42nd career appearance as a collegian, stopped 13 shots to claim his first career shutout. He now stands 8-2-0 on the season.

Freshman forward Reggie Lutz chipped in with three assists in the game, while Jack McNeely, Max Coatta and Jake Jaremko all contributed two helpers. Jaremko has extended his point-scoring streak to seven games and now has 17 points on four goals and 13 assists in 16 games played.

The Mavericks owned a 44-13 shots on goal advantage in the game.  Minnesota State converted on four-of-six power play chances and held the Lakers scoreless in three power play opportunities in the contest.  The seven goals scored tonight are the most scored in a game by the Mavericks this year.

The Mavericks return home to face Alabama-Huntsville in a pair of WCHA contests in Mankato next Friday and Saturday.

Head coach Mike Hastings commented following the win.
