Duluth, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey suffered a 2-1 setback in the first game of a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at Minnesota Duluth on Friday night at AMSOIL Arena.
After Minnesota State (2-10-1, (1-8-0-0 WCHA) and Minnesota Duluth (6-8-0, 4-5-0-0 WCHA) played to a scoreless stalemate through the first 35:00 of the game, Minnesota Duluth's
Lynn Astrup scored the first goal of the evening at 15:44 of the 2nd period — two seconds after the Mavericks killed off a Bulldog power play — to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead going into the second intermission.
The Bulldogs struck quickly after the second intermission to extend their lead to 2-0.
Naomi Rogge scored the goal at 00:42 of the third period.
Minnesota State fought back and cut Minnesota Duluth's lead to 2-1 at 14:52 of the third period when junior forward
Emily Antony scored her second goal of the season — increasing her point streak to four games. Sophomore forward
Sofia Poinar and senior defenseman
Anna Keys assisted on the play.
The Mavericks pulled junior goaltender
Katie Bidulka (1-7-0), who made 29 saves on the evening, for an extra attacker with 1:03 remaining in regulation. However, the Mavericks were unable to score and dropped the game 2-1.
Jessica Convery (6-6-0) made 15 saves in net for the Bulldogs.
The Mavericks, who were outshot 31-16, had half their shots on goal in the third period.
Both teams were 0-of-1 on the power play.
Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth conclude their two-game WCHA series on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:07 p.m., at AMSOIL Arena.
