Knutson's Goal and Assist Help Lift Mavericks Past Huskies

Mankato, Minn. ---   12th-rated Minnesota State got a goal and an assist from senior forward Zeb Knutson in skating to a 3-1 win over #16 Michigan Tech in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played Friday in Mankato, Minn.

Sophomore forward Marc Michaelis grabbed a rebound off of a shot from defenseman Ian Scheid and wristed a shot past Tech netminder Patrick Munson at 1:59 of the first with his second goal of the year giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Knutson drew an assist on the goal.

Following a scoreless second period, which included the Mavericks staving off a five-minute Michigan Tech power play, the Huskies knotted it up at 3:39 on when Justin Misiak put the puck into the net, but Minnesota State responded with two goals to claim the win.

Knutson scored his team-best fourth goal of the year at 14:48 by shoveling a shot from the side into the net.  The goal is his ninth career game-winning goal. Senior forward Brad McClure added an insurance tally at 16:53 with his first goal of the season (and 35th career marker) making it a 3-1 final.

Senior netminder Connor LaCouvee turned aside 17 shots and now stands 3-0-0 for the year.

The Mavericks, who are 4-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 WCHA, outshot the Huskies by a 33-18 margin in the contest.  Minnesota State were zero-of-three in power play chances, while MTU finished with a zero-for-five in opportunities with the man advantage.

The two teams close out the two-game WCHA series Saturday night with a 7:07 p.m. face-off scheduled for Verizon Center in downtown Mankato.
