MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State men's basketball coach
Matt Margenthaler has announced that
Trey Sampson will join the Maverick men's basketball team in the fall after spending the previous season at Missouri Western State.
All signings and transfers are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
A guard from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sampson played in 30 games for the Missouri Western State Griffons, including 25 starts, where he averaged 11.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Sampson reached double-digits in the scoring column in 17 games last season, including five instances when he scored 20 points or more. He also finished his season shooting 86% from the free throw line, which including a 10-for-10 showing against Northeastern State.
"Trey will provide us with great depth at our guard position," Margenthaler said. "He has the ability not only to shoot the ball but he can create off the bounce and is a tough nosed defender."
Prior to joining Missouri Western State, Sampson played at Des Moines Area Community College for two seasons. As a sophomore, Sampson started in all 33 games as he averaged 10.5 points per game. He also led DMACC with 81 three pointers as he received All-Region Second Team honors.
The Mavericks finished their 2015-16 season with a 22-10 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
