Bradenton, Fla. --- Senior pole vaulter
Faryn Wirkus capped her career in earning All-America honors in the first day at the 2016 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bradenton, Fla.
Wirkus, an Edgar, Wis., native making her second career appearance at outdoor nationals, cleared 12-7 ½ in tying for sixth today. In doing so, Wirkus becomes a three-time All-American (she finished fourth at the national indoor championships this year and was seventh at national indoors in 2013).
Senior
Morgan Stampley, who was making her second career appearance at outdoor nationals, finished 12th in the hammer throw with a toss of 182-2.
Senior sprinter
Richard Wilhite, who is appearing at outdoor nationals for the second time in his career, had the 16th-fastest 100m time (10.62) in prelims today and did not advance to the finals.
The Minnesota State men's 4 x 100m relay team consisting of
Geno Bullard,
Richard Wilhite,
Myles Hunter and
Paul Selman ran seventh-fastest time (40.43) in prelims to advance to Saturday's final.
Several Mavericks are slated to compete Friday with Wilhite running in the 200m prelims, junior
Myles Hunter in the 110m hurdles prelims, junior
Haley Kruger in the 800m prelims, along with juniors
Brooke Foreman and
Altoniece Williams in the 100m hurdles prelims.
