Mavericks to Wrap Road Schedule at Winona State, Upper Iowa

MANKATO, Minn. --- Buoyed by a pair of road victories last weekend, the Minnesota State men's basketball team will wrap up its regular season road schedule this weekend as it take on Winona State on Friday and Upper Iowa on Saturday. Game times are set for 8:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m., respectively.

Minnesota State History: The 2015-16 season marks the 94th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,285-865 (.597) in 2,150 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns an 122-46 (.726) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

The Mavericks made their 12th appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. MSU owns a 15-12 record (.555) in NCAA Tournament play and most recently lost to Northwest Missouri State 59-56. The Mavericks have hosted four of the last six NCAA Central Region Tournaments at Taylor Center.
 
About Last Weekend: The Mavericks upped their road record to 7-3 on the season last weekend as they defeated the University of Mary 76-71 and Minot State 73-63. MSU now owns a 17-7 overall record, including a 12-6 NSIC record which puts MSU in third place in the NSIC standings.

Junior Jon Fuqua averaged 17 points and 11.5 rebounds per game this past weekend as he notched double-doubles against U-Mary and MISU. Senior Jalen Pendleton led the Mavericks in the scoring column with an average of 21.5 points per game, while freshman Joey Witthus averaged  11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

As a team, MSU averaged 74.5 points and 41.5 rebounds per game last weekend. The Mavericks also shot 40.5% from the field.

Against the Warriors: Friday's game between Minnesota State and Winona State marks the 131st all-time meeting between them, with the Mavericks holding the series edge at 85-45. MSU defeated WSU 78-77 earlier this season in Taylor Center.

Senior Jalen Pendleton notched 19 points and nine assists against the Warriors earlier this season, while sophomore TJ Lake dropped in 17 points of his own.

Matt Margenthaler owns a 13-16 all-time record against Winona State, including a 5-8 record on the road.

Against the Peacocks: Saturday's encounter between the Mavericks and Upper Iowa marks the 20th all-time meeting between them, with MSU leading the all-time series 18-1. MSU defeated UIU 97-75 earlier this season in Taylor Center.

Five Mavericks reached double-digits in the scoring column against UIU earlier this season, including junior Jon Fuqua, who posted 21 points and nine rebounds. Senior Jalen Pendleton and sophomore TJ Lake added 17 points each as well.

Matt Margenthaler owns an 18-1 all-time record against Upper Iowa, including an 8-0 road record.

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State enters the weekend with a 17-7 record, including a 12-6 NSIC record. MSU defeated both U-Mary (76-71) and Minot State (73-63) on the road last weekend to move into third place in the NSIC standings.

Senior Jalen Pendleton is leading the MSU offense with 17.6 points and 4.9 assists per game, to go with 5.3 rebounds per game. Junior Jon Fuqua is averaging 14.4 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per contest and has recorded a double-double in four of MSU's last five games. Freshman Joey Witthus is averaging 11.7 points per game as well.

As a team, MSU is shooting 47% from the field this season, and is bringing down 39.6 rebounds per contest. The Mavericks have also passed out 354 assists and have recorded 128 steals.

Concerning the Warriors: The Winona State Warriors enter the week the owners of a 12-10 overall record, including an 11-7 NSIC record. WSU as won its last five games, including a pair of wins against St. Cloud State (96-78) and Minnesota Duluth (81-60) in Winona last weekend.

Kyle Bauman leads Winona State with 14.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season. Riley Bambenek is averaging 11.4 points and a team-leading 3.2 assists per game.

As a team, the Warriors are averaging 72.3 points per game on the season. WSU is also shooting 47% from the field and is averaging 36.0 rebounds per game as well.

Todd Eisner is in his first season at the helm of the men's basketball program at Winona State.

Concerning the Peacocks: The Upper Iowa Peacocks enter the weekend the owners of a 14-13 overall record, including a 10-8 NSIC record. UIU won both of its games last weekend against Minnesota Duluth (90-88) and St. Cloud State (104-85).

UIU has five players averaging more than 10 points per game this season, including Jimmy Roth who is averaging 13.1 points per contest. Carson Parker is posting 11.2 points and a team-leading 5.4 rebounds per game as well.

Upper Iowa is averaging 82 points and 35.4 rebounds per game and is shooting 45% from the field. UIU has also passed out 334 assists but has committed 355 turnovers.

Brooks McKowen is in his third season at the helm of the UIU men's basketball program. He owns a 47-40 overall record.
