Mavericks Fall to Bulldogs 3-2 in OT

Friday’s contest marks Minnesota State’s sixth overtime game this season

Box Score MANKATO, Minn.  ---  The Minnesota State women's hockey team scored two goals in the third period to come back and drive the game to overtime Friday afternoon against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs.  The extra-period game marked the Mavericks fifth overtime game in the last nine played.

In the first period, Minnesota Duluth took command at 3:01 when Lara Stalder made a play to keep the puck in the Maverick zone, ultimately landing on the stick of Michela Cava who had a clear path on Maverick goaltender Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.). Cava made a move to her backhand, beating Quade glove side. Cava struck again at the 10:27 mark when Stalder found her out front from behind the Maverick net. Cava snapped a one-timer to finish the play off to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. The period would go on to close out with UMD having a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard and an advantage in shots on goal at 12-3.

Though the second frame looked to play out evenly on the scoreboard, it was Minnesota State who won the period, outshooting the Bulldogs by a clip of 10-2 in the period.

Minnesota State would carry their momentum from the second period into the third outshooting the Bulldogs 7-3 in the stanza before capitalizing on a faceoff win. At 9:52 of the final-regulation period, sophomore Lindsey Coleman (Burnsville, Minn.) won a faceoff back to junior Savannah Quandt (Mankato, Minn.) in Minnesota Duluth's zone on the power-play. Quandt ripped a wrister that zipped past Bulldog goaltender, Kayla Black's blocker, cutting the lead to one. Sophomore Amanda Martin (Peoria, Ariz.) tied the game up at the 17:19 mark with a shot that snuck through the five-hole of Black. Martin's game tying goal marked her second of the season with Coleman and Steph Keryluk (Verona, Wis.) picking up assists on the play.

In overtime, it was Minnesota Duluth who would tally the last marker to come away with the extra-period victory. At 3:54, Bulldog forward Ashleigh Brykaliuk carried the puck down the left side towards the back of the net, then finding Cava to collect her hattrick out front to finish the game at 3-2.

Quade would finish the game with 21 saves while both teams ended the contest with 24 shots apiece.  Special teams were not a factor as neither team was able to capitalize on their one power-play opportunity.

Minnesota State will close out their series with Minnesota Duluth tomorrow afternoon in Downtown Mankato.  Action is slated for a 2:07 p.m. start at Verizon Wireless Center.
