MANKATO, Minn--- The Minnesota State men's track and field team opened its 2016-17 indoor season with the Chuck Petersen Open Friday and Saturday at Myers Field House in Mankato.
Friday began with the heptathlon which featured excellent performances from Maverick sophomore
Anyah Nutter, sophomore
Calvin Buesgens, and freshman
Logan Bristol. Culminating on Saturday, the final results had Nutter finish second with a final point total of 4767. Buesgens (4541) and Bristol (4392) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Saturday started with
Djimon James taking second place the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.67. In the 60-meter dash the Mavericks were led by
Parker Gloudemans (7.04) who finished third followed by teammates sophomore
Artavius Nixon (7.630), sophomore
Jack Curtis (7.067), and freshman
Jake Gajewski (7.15) who finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.
The 200-meter race had Gajewski finish second (22.10) and sophomore
Ryan Immeker finish third (22.84) with Curtis and Nixon finishing fifth and sixth respectively. The 400-meters saw MSU leading the way and sweeping the top three spots led by sophomore
John Schuster with a time of 49.26.
Tanner Ogren finished second with a time of 49.95 followed by freshman
Dalton Bialke(50.55).
The strong day on the track for the Mavericks would end with the 4x400 relay team of Diamond, Schuster, Bialke, and Ogren dashing to the finish line with a time of 3:31.02.
Junior
Jeff DeCock of MSU placed first in the high jump at 2.05m, followed by Curtis who earned second with a jump of 2.02m. Junior
Alex Campbell earned first place in the triple jump with a final distance of 14.62m.
Success would continue for the Mavericks as
Sam Udermann and teammate
Bryan Caffin smashed the competition in the weight throw with Udermann taking first with a distance of 16.86m and Caffin finishing second with a throw of 16.80m. In shot put Sophomore
Jayme LaPlante earned first place with a throw of 15.10m. Caffin (15.04m) and Udermann (13.68) finished second and fourth, respectively.
Minnesota State will not return to action until January 7, 2017 for the MSU Alumni Open in Mankato at Myers Field House.
