Mankato, Minn. --- #15th-rated Minnesota State erased a 3-0 first-period deficit by scoring four times in the second period en route to a 5-5 overtime victory with the University of Alaska in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest played in Mankato Saturday night.
The Nanooks outscored the Mavericks by a 2-1 margin in the sudden-death shootout to secure the extra point in WCHA play.
Alaska got on the board first when forward
Chad Staley beat
Cole Huggins stickside at 10:58 in the first period. The Nanooks scored again at 12:40 on a goal by forward
Josh Ericson and at 16:24 when
Brandon Morley tallied a shorthanded breakaway marker, which forced Minnesota State into a goaltending change replacing
Cole Huggins with
Jason Pawloski.
The Mavericks began its comeback early in the second when junior forward
Brad McClure took a pass from
Daniel Brickley before lifting the puck past Davis Jones at 0:26 for his eighth goal of the year. Brickley then scored on a bad angle from below the goal line at 2:12 to bring Minnesota State within one. The Mavericks tied the game at 12:50 as freshman blueliner
Ian Schied wired a shot past Jones for his fourth goal of the year and took the lead at 10:25 with a shorthanded goal from
Marc Michaelis on a nifty move in front where he tucked the puck in between Davis's pad for his ninth goal of the year.
Alaska scored twice early in the third to regain the lead.
Troy Van Teetering knotted to score at the 0:27 mark and Staley got his second of the game at 1:48 to make it a 5-4 game. The Mavericks rallied to tie the game at 10:27 thanks to
C.J. Franklin's nifty backhander. The goal is his fifth goal of the season and regulation ended at 5-5.
The two teams battled through a scoreless five-minute overtime period and a scoreless three-on-three overtime period.
Ross Heidt and
Tyler Cline scored goals in the shootout for the Nanooks, while
Parker Tuomie scored the lone goal in the shootout for the Mavericks.
Minnesota State, which was 0-for-8 on the power play, put 57 shots on goal in the contest. The Nanooks were zero-for-four with the man advantage.
Brickley, who had a goal and an assist in the game, totaled four points (two goals and two assists) in the two wins over Alaska on the weekend, while Michaelis, who also had a goal and two assists tonight, finished with seven points (four goals and three assists) in the series vs. the Nanooks. McClure had a goal and an assist in the game and finished with one goal and four assists in the weekend series.
Cole Huggins and
Jason Pawloski combined for 22 saves in the game. Pawloski, who got the tie, now stands 3-2-2 for 2016-17
The Mavericks are 9-5-2 on the season. Alaska goes to 4-9-3 with tonight's result.
Minnesota State continues WCHA action next weekend with a road series at Ferris State.
