MINNEAPOLIS --- Minnesota State women's hockey was defeated by No. 2 Minnesota 5-0 on Friday night at Ridder Arena.
The Mavericks (2-8-1, 0-8-1-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) fell behind 2-0 in the first period. Nicole Schammel scored the Golden Gophers' (10-1-0, 8-1-0-0 WCHA) first goal at 5:18, and Dani Cameranesi scored the second goal at 13:36. Sophomore goaltender
Katie Bidulka (1-2-0) made nine saves in the period -- 30 saves in the game.
The Mavericks were unable to respond in the second period as the Golden Gophers scored two more times to increase their advantage to 4-0. Cameranesi scored both Golden Gopher goals in the second period to record a hat trick in the game. Her goals came at 14:50 and 19:03, respectively.
In the third period, the Mavericks allowed one more goal. Sydney Baldwin scored at 15:38 to put the Golden Gophers up 5-0 at 15:38. The Mavericks were unable to cut into the lead as the Golden Gophers held on for the 5-0 victory.
Sophomore forward
Corbin Boyd led the Mavericks with three shots on goal.
Kelly Pannek recorded three assists for the Golden Gophers -- all coming on Cameranesi goals. Lindsay Agnew, Caitlin Reilly, Kate Schipper, Megan Wolfe and Schammel each tallied assists for the Golden Gophers.
Sidney Peters (10-1-0) made 10 saves in net for the Golden Gophers.
The Mavericks finished 0-of-1 on the power play, while the Golden Gophers converted on 2-of-5 power play opportunities.
The Mavericks return to the ice on Sunday for the conclusion of their two-game WCHA series at Minnesota. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:07 p.m.
