Mankato, Minn. --- Freshman forward Demi Gardner scored in the second period to give Minnesota State a 1-0 lead over No. 1 Wisconsin at Verizon Wireless Center on Saturday afternoon, but Wisconsin scored the next three goals and Minnesota State lost 3-1. 

Just over 1:30 into the second period, sophomore forward Emily Antony intercepted a Wisconsin pass. Antony moved the puck to junior forward Hannah Davidson, who slid the puck to Gardner, standing alone in front of the net. Gardner beat Wisconsin's Ann-Renee Desbiens (9-0-1) at 1:48 for her second career goal -- putting Minnesota State (2-7-1, 0-7-1-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) up 1-0 over Wisconsin (9-0-1, 7-0-1-1 WCHA). 

The Badgers responded with three goals of their own in the second period. Melissa Channell scored her first goal of the season at 4:51 to tie the game at 1-1. Baylee Wellhausen scored the go-ahead and insurance goals at 14:17 and 17:02, respectively, to put Wisconsin up 3-1. 

Neither team scored in the third period as the Badgers, who garnered a 37-14 shot advantage, held on for the 3-1 win.

Senior netminder Brianna Quade (1-6-1) made 34 saves in goal for Minnesota State, while Desbiens stopped 13 shots for Wisconsin.    

Davidson and Antony tallied their second and third assists of the season, respectively. The two forwards are also tied for the team lead in points (4).

The Mavericks return to action at Minnesota on Friday at 6:07 p.m., for the start of a two-game WCHA series.
