MSU Men’s Track Dominate 200-Meter Dash at MSU Alumni Open

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's track and field team saw their success from last month continue over at the MSU Alumni Open.

The afternoon got off to a fast start as the 4x800 team of Victor Bowen, Derek Finsterwalder, Brennan Holman, and Austin Pasch took home first place. Bowen had an amazing anchor leg as he made up a 100 meter deficit to win the race.

In the 60-meter dash Kryan Stewart came in second place with a time of 6.92. He provisionally qualified with his preliminary time of 6.86. Jacob Gourley was a close second (6.93). Myles Hunter posted a blistering time of 7.83 in the 60-meter hurdles claiming first place. He has already qualified for the national meet and is ranked number 1 in the nation for division 2 in the 60-meter hurdles. The highlight of the day for the Mavericks was the 200-meter dash. The top six spots were filled by the purple and gold. Leading the way was Stewart (21.51) followed by Richard Wilhite (21.94), Gourley (22.27), Javontee Brice (22.50), Ryan Immeker (22.68), and Emmanuel Dixon (22.88). With his time, Stewart had provisionally qualified.

The Mavericks were led by their freshmen runners in the 400-meter dash. John Schuster finished in first with a run of 49.78. Reid Diamond was second with a time of 49.91. Placing fifth was Joe Williams (51.54). The 4x400-meter relay team of Schuster, Diamond, Brice, and Hunter finished a close second in a time of 3:23.03.

MSU also did well in the field events. The Maverick high jumpers had a great day today as three jumpers met the provisional qualifying standards. Jeff DeCock took second place with a jump of 7'1''. He was followed by Michael Sandle in third (6'11.75''). Frank Veldman placed fifth (6'9.50'').  

Benjamin Ojika placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21'2''. The top two spots in the triple jump were Mavericks. Alex Campbell captured first place with a leap of 47'03.75'', which also provisionally qualifies him for nationals. Ojika took second with a jump of 44'09.00''.

The day would finish up with junior Bryan Caffin placing third in the shot put with a mark of 49'02.50" and again finishing third in the weight throw with a toss of 54'02.50''.

The Mavericks will be back in action next weekend with participants going to the Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln, Neb, and the Northwest Open in Minneapolis, Minn.
