ST. PETER, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team opened the NSIC portion of its scheduled on the right foot Sunday afternoon as it defeated Southwest Minnesota State 8-1.
With the win, MSU improves to 2-1 on the season, including a 1-0 conference record. With the loss, SMSU fall to 0-1.
The Mavericks began the day winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Junior
Melissa Mashburn and freshman
Erin Streeter defeated Ashley Hoehne and Britney Thompson 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match, while junior
Abby Schmidt and sophomore
Lisa Dobbelaere swept Mariya Krumm and Madyson Brinkman 8-0 in the third doubles match.
Minnesota State went on to sweep the singles matches to lock down the 8-1 win. Sophomore
Killian Doran won the No. 1 singles match over Gabby Tellijohn 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), while Streeter defeated Crystal Overbaugh 6-4, 6-2 in the second singles match.
Mashburn and senior
Sarah McCann won the third and fourth singles matches 6-0, 6-1, respectively, over Krumm and Hoehne, while Dobbelaere defeated Thompson 6-0, 6-2 in the fifth singles match. Schmidt won the final singles match 6-1, 6-2 over Brinkman.
The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13, as they host Sioux Falls at the Swanson Tennis Center. The dual is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
