Mankato, Minn. --- #19 Minnesota State outshot Michigan Tech, but could not find a way to generate enough offense in dropping a 3-1 decision to the Huskies in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Saturday in Houghton, Mich.
Senior forward
Malcolm Gould converted on a nice play out of the corner from
C.J. Eick to give the host Huskies a 1-0 lead at 9:09 of the opening period. Gould then found
Alex Petan on the other side of the slot with a nice pass and freshman netminder
Jason Pawloski had no chance as Petan tallied his 12th goal of the year at 15:41 of the second period.
Minnesota State junior defenseman
Sean Flanagan put a shot on net that freshman forward
Chandler Madry pounced on and put past
Jamie Phillips at 4:46 of the third period to pull the Mavericks within one. The goal is the second of the year for Madry. Petan's second marker of the game, which came at 12:15 of the final frame, finished out the scoring in the game as the Huskies ended a ten-game winless streak with the Mavericks.
Freshman netminder
Jason Pawloski, who started his 13th consecutive game for the Mavericks, stopped 18 shots in absorbing the loss. Pawloski now owns an 8-2-5 record in his first year of college hockey.
Minnesota State, which has not allowed a power play goal since Nov. 21 in a game vs. Northern Michigan, held the Huskies to a zero-for-three performance in chances with the man advantage. The Mavericks were held scoreless in their two power play opportunites. The Mavericks outshot Tech by a 26-21 margin in the contest.
The Maverick had not lost to Michigan Tech since 2011-12 and had gone 7-0-3 in games between the two schools during that span.
