SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- Minnesota State's offense came out of a bit of slump on Wednesday against Augustana College as the seventh-rated Mavericks won a pair of 9-7 games over the Vikings in Sioux Falls.
The Mavericks record improves to 19-4 and 9-3 in the NSIC with the sweep.
In game one, senior
Connor McCallum hit a double and scored off a single by senior
Max Waletich in the first inning to take an early 1-0. The Vikings evened the score at one in the second, but in the fourth inning a solo home run by redshirt freshman
Dylan Dresel put MSU back on top.
The Mavericks increased their lead to 7-1 after a pair of two-run doubles by junior
Taylor Branstad and redshirt freshman
Josh Crosby as well as a RBI single by redshirt freshman
Luke Waldek plated five runs in the fifth inning. Augustana put together a rally of its own and tied up the score at seven as the game went into extra innings.
McCallum was the hero in the eighth inning as he hit his second double of the game to score sophomore
Eric Peterson and senior
Kevin Kramer to put MSU up 9-7.
Junior
Dakota Belter pitched the final 1.2 innings to pick up his first win of the year. Senior
Joey Reed started on the mound and allowed three earned runs in 4.1 innings.
McCallum, Waletich, Branstad and Dresel each had two hits and combined for eight of the nine RBI.
In the second game of the doubleheader, singles by McCallum and Waletich put MSU up for a short moment at 2-0. The Vikings put together a three-run third inning to take the lead 3-2.
In the top of the fourth the Mavericks used a few Viking errors and some pitching woes to increase their lead by scoring seven runs. Peterson doubled in a pair of runs and McCallum singled home a run while Senior
Nolan Johnson capped off the inning with RBI double to put the Mavericks up 9-3.
Augustana cut into the lead with four runs but junior
Peter Gaustad and Belter came in to relieve starting pitcher redshirt freshman
Aaron Rozek and combined for 3.1 scoreless innings to preserve the win for the Mavericks.
Minnesota State will continue its NSIC road swing this weekend against Bemidji State on Saturday and Sunday for a couple doubleheaders. First pitch for both days is slated for 12 p.m.
