SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- The third-rated Minnesota State Mavericks continued their dominance on Sunday as they swept the University of Sioux Falls. They defeated the Cougars by scores of 3-1 and 15-2 to push their winning streak to 18 games.
Sioux Falls took the lead in the first inning after a throwing error by junior
Kyle Toth allowed a run to score. MSU got that run back in the second inning after a couple of errors on the Cougars allowed redshirt freshman
Dylan Dresel to score.
The score would remain tied at 1-1 until MSU took the lead in the final inning of play. Redshirt freshman
Josh Wenzel led of the inning with a single and a sacrifice bunt by Toth pushed him to second. Senior
Connor McCallum hit a single and then senior
Max Waletich hit an RBI single to plate Wenzel. Senior
Nolan Johnson followed that up with a double to the gap in left center and that would be all starting pitcher redshirt freshman
Aaron Rozek needed.
Rozek did not allow the Cougars hitters to mount any sort of rallies. He pitched a complete game two-hitter allowing zero earned runs while striking out six batters to move to 5-0 on the season.
After only scoring three runs in game one, the Mavericks surpassed that in the first inning of game two tallying five runs. Waletich hit an RBI single to score Toth for the first run of the game. MSU then loaded the bases and junior
Taylor Branstad drew a walk. Dresel followed that up with an RBI single and later senior
Kevin Kramer hit a sacrifice fly for the fifth run of the inning.
The Cougars tallied one run in the second but an RBI double Wenzel and sacrifice fly by Kramer in the top of third increased MSU's lead. USF answered back with another run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 7-2.
The Mavericks scored two more runs from a single off the bat of redshirt freshman
Luke Waldek in the fourth inning before busting out for five runs in the sixth. Dresel hit a triple to the right center gap to clear the bases scoring three runs. Wenzel singled in a run as well Johnson. MSU added one run in the seventh to boost its lead to 15-2.
Junior
Peter Gaustad picked up his third win of the year after pitching one inning in relief and allowing two hits and zero earned runs. Senior
Nick Veale started the game and allowed five hits, one earned run, three walks and struck out one in three innings. Sophomore's
Lucas Henning and
Tyler Frohwirth along with freshman
Christian Howell each pitched one inning of relief.
Dresel finished game two 2-3 with five RBI and two runs scored to pace the offensive attack while Wenzel went 3-3 with two RBI.
Minnesota State, which now stands 35-4 overall and 25-3 in the NSIC, will hit the road for its final regular season road games of the year when they travel to Wayne State on Wednesday for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
