OWATONNA, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team opened its season on a high note Saturday evening as it defeated Southwest Minnesota State 8-1.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 1-0 on the season, including a 1-0 mark in league play. With the loss, SMSU falls to 0-2 on the season, including a 0-1 record in NSIC action.
The Mavericks began the day winning two of the three doubles matches. The team of sophomore
Melissa Mashburn and freshman
Destiny Lee won the No. 2 doubles match by the score of 8-0, while the pairing of freshmen
Andrea Erdman and
Lisa Dobbelaere won the third doubles match 8-0.
The Mavericks finished the dual winning all six of the singles matches to claim the 8-1 victory.
Freshman
Killian Doran won the No. 1 singles match over Gabriele Tellijohn 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 10-7. Mashburn also won the No. 2 singles match in three sets as she bested Crystal Overbaugh 3-6, 6-2, 13-11.
Junior
Sarah McCann won the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-1, while Lee won the fourth singles match 6-0, 6-1. Dobbelaere and Erdman won the fifth and sixth singles matches, respectively, by the scores of 6-0, 6-1 as well.
The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, as they host the Augustana Vikings in St. Peter. The dual is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
