COLUMBUS, Ohio. --- The Minnesota State Women's hockey team was down 2-0 after two periods but were able to claw back into the game and tie it up in the final period. It was Buckeyes who ended up coming out on top, scoring on the power play in the closing minutes as they defeated the Mavericks 3-2 Friday night in Columbus.
Minnesota State's record falls to 3-24-1 overall and 1-20-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play while the Buckeyes improve to 15-13-1 and 10-10-3 in the WCHA.
The Buckeyes jumped out to 1-0 lead at 10:17 of the first period as Kendall Curtis was able to get one past sophomore 
Brianna Quade. OSU struck again at the 17 minute mark as Quade made the initial save on Kari Schmitt's first shot but was but was able to pick up the rebound and sneak it past Quade glove side to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Mavericks cut the lead in half at 8:19 of the final period as senior 
Kathleen Rogan cleared the zone and found freshman 
Hannah Davidson who then found freshman 
Nicole Schammel down the left side. Schammel took a shot that found the back of the net for her eighth score of the season. The Mavericks tied up the score with a shorthanded goal at 15:53 of the period. Schammel received a pass and skated in to take a shot from just inside the blue line that bounced off the helmet of OSU's netminder Stacy Danczak and slide in for her second goal of the game. Junior 
Katie Johnson recorded her third assist of the season and senior 
Shelby Moteyunas tallied her fifth helper on the scoring play. The Buckeyes came right back scoring a power play goal at the 16:32 mark of the final period and the Mavericks were unable to come up with the equalizer in the closing minutes.
Quade recorded 31 saves on the evening for MSU as her record falls to 1-7-0 on the season. The Mavericks were 0-2 on the power play while Buckeyes went 1-4 with the extra skater advantage. Shots were in favor of OSU, 34-14.
The Mavericks and Buckeyes will close out the series tomorrow afternoon with the opening face off slated for 2:07 p.m. ET.
