St. Cloud, Minn. --- Minnesota State and St. Cloud State played a tightly contested match up on Monday night in St. Cloud, but it was the Huskies who came out on top by a final score of 3-1.
The Mavericks scored the games first goal but the Huskies countered back with three unanswered goals of their own.
Freshman
Nicole Schammel scored short handed at 9:14 of the second period to give MSU a 1-0 lead. Schammel received a pass from senior
Kathleen Rogan and beat SCSU netminder Julie Friend for her 11th goal of the season. The Huskies evened up the score at one a piece when Jenna Redford slid one past senior goaltender
Erin Krichiver at the 14:27 mark of middle period. Going into the second intermission, both teams had 23 shots on goal.
In the third period the Huskies took advantage on the power play at 4:28 as Abby Ness scored her first of two goals of the period. Ness later added empty net goal to give the Huskies a 3-1 win.
The goal by Schammel gives her 21 points on the season which ties her for sixth most points by a freshman in program history.
Minnesota State was outshot on the night by a small margin of two. SCSU had 34 shots on goal compared to 32 for MSU. The Mavericks went 0-3 on the power play while the Huskies went 1-4.
Minnesota State, who now stands at 3-28-1 and 1-24-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, will close out the regular season this weekend against North Dakota on Friday (7:07 p.m.) and Saturday (4:07 p.m.).
