Mavericks Set Pace at Chuck Petersen Open

Wirkus sets personal best and provisionally qualifies for nationals in pole vault

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's track and field team opened up its season as it hosted the Chuck Petersen Pre-Season Open on Saturday. Other teams in competition included Bethany Lutheran College, University Sioux Falls, Concordia University, Winona State, Viterbo University, and Waldorf College.

The day started off with Minnesota State taking the top three spots in the 60-meter dash as freshman Afure Adah finished in first place (7.75), Gabi Gaines taking second place (7.82), and Briana Holt taking third place (7.86). Karlona Gregory came in sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.92). Mackenzie Beals sprinted her way into a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.94, while Gaines and Holt finished just behind her with times of 25.99 and 26.01 for fourth and fifth. Gregory placed seventh with a time of 26.27.

Brooke Foreman (unattached) took home first place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.92 in the final heat while sophomore Kellie Wong placed fourth (9.27).

MSU took the top eight spots in the 400 meter dash. Stacy Smidt and Kimmy Wreh finished first and second with times of 59.33 and 59.82 respectively. Jessika Dieringer (60.11), Amelia Kjos (60.88) and Taylor Naatz (61.02) placed third, fourth, and fifth to cap off Minnesota States dominance.

The Purple and Gold took the first and second spots in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Haley Kruger crossed the finish line at 2:16.74 while freshman Bobby Patrick finished with a time of 2:16.74. The Mavericks' success continued in the 1000-meter run as Sally O'Brien finished in first place for the Mavericks with a mark of 3:21.71 and the 4x400 relay squad placing second among the competition.

Leading the way in the field events for Minnesota State was Faryn Wirkus who placed first in the pole vault with a personal best of 3.92 meters, meeting the national provisional standard. Grady Keding followed Wirkus, placing fifth with a height of 3.52 meters. Brianna Ziolkowski placed first in the high jump with a personal best of 1.68 meters and while Kayla Lindell placed fifth with a jump of 1.60 meters.

In the weight throw, Emma Edelen placed ninth for the Mavericks with a throw of 14.58 meters.

Minnesota State will not return to action until January 9, 2016 for the MSU Alumni Open in Mankato at Myers Field House.
